John Mayer. I'm not talking about his "pop friendly hits" I'm talking about his awesome blues and funky guitar playing. I bought the John Mayer Trio Live album and it is incredible. That guy can play the guitar.

you can cover your fave songs from him, learning about phrasings, song structure, songwriting, bendings, slides etc.
then you put your knew knowledge into your own playing, songwriting etc. put your own feelings into it. be yourself not some other.

good luck and cheers :D

When I first started taking lessons, my teacher asked me, "Who do you want to sound like?"

I said, "I want to sound like myself. I just don't know what I sound like yet."

So now that I know what I sound like, I'd just like to sound like a more talented, soulful version of myself.

true talent comes from someone
who writes and play's his or her's
own music. its to easy to play something
thats already been done by someone else.
all your doing is copying something thats
already done. nothing wrong with takeing
a little bit here and there of your favorite
player BUT! you need to incorporate it with
your own sound and style. when you do that
it shows your true talent and not the talents
of someone else.

I guess he could pass for one of the Brothers. I wonder how long he practices making those facial expressions.

I wish i could play like i did in my early 20's. I think im the only 30something guitarist that admits to diminishing ability. By the time im 40 i'll be struggling on a 3 string open C chord at this rate.

Clapton said that he wishes he could play the way he did in the early 90's

I think a lot of you guys are reading this the wrong way. I don't want to sound exactly like him and copy his material, I just thinnk he is a very soulfull and talented player. I have a lot of favourite guitar players including.......Mike McCready, Stone Gossard, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, and Mayer. I try to take a little bit from all of them and learn from them all.

Some of my influences are Dave Murray and Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden, George Lynch, John Sykes, Warren DeMartini, "Fast" Eddie Clark from Motorhead, very early Kirk Hammet and Gary Holt from Exodus. There's probably somemore thrown in there somewhere but thats been my main players since I was a kid. I did the whole Yngwie and Paul Gilbert thing to but as I got older and devoloped arthritis in both my hands I just can't do that super fast stuff anymore.
