I've noticed a lot of people who have been posting threads wondering which guitar to get.... thats fine, we're here to help, but please be more specific in posting so we can help you

please include:

-price range you are looking to buy the guitar in
- what styles of music you play, i can't emphasize that enough... that may be one of the most important factors... if you don't tell us, we don't know whether single coils or buckers would be best, etc.
-read that last one again, its important
-any other info like what your current guitar is and amps etc.

also, we just try and make suggestions, based on our experience and opinions, what guitar may suit you.... you have to make the decision though... i STRONGLY recommend playing the guitar first if you can.... it's so much more reliable than buying online, where you may get a dud and you may have to deal with a long return process

as for some basic guidelines, here goes:

- humbuckers, single coils, and HSS guitars will all feel different tonally... they all have their purposes, certain music styles will be better fit by each combo.... comparing gibsons and fenders won't do much good because both guitars are great for certain musical styles, so don't argue over it

- there are many neck shapes, make sure you get one that suits you, they all have different feels to them

-make sure you choose your wood wisely, the body and neck woods all contribute to the overall sound of the guitar along with the pickups, any questions on that just ask or search it on google

- just because a guitar looks good, doesnt mean it plays well

-there are differences in mexican, japanese, american, and custom shop fenders.... its not very hard to know the more you pay, the more you should expect in the quality and tone departments, but once again, play it to be sure

-squiers aren't bad guitars... especially for beginners, its a nice guitar to have to make sure you want to play the guitar and you don't blow all your money on something overly expensive

-teles and strats are the same as arguing gibson vs. fender.... both are great guitars, but theyre good for different things

-once again, PLAY THE GUITAR BEFORE YOU BUY IT.... i cannot stress that enough

if anyone feels the need to add any more tips, feel free to contribute, i just hope this helps clarify things so its not so confusing to help some people decide a guitar

thank you citizenerased we've needed a post like this for a while.

I would like to add that when buying a used guitar buy with caution. I'm not dissing used guitars or anything they're great but i'd be very careful when buying used guitars from the internet such as ebay. Why? you ask, well i strongly believe that you should be able to TRY THE EXACT GUITAR YOU ARE BUYING!! not just the same model because i believe that every guitar is different so you have to be careful especially with used guitars because they may have underlying problems.

So if you're going to buy a used guitar i strongly recommend using that exact guitar before handing out your hard-earned cash. All in all i recommend buying a used guitar from a store where you can play it but sometimes you'll get lucky with ebay and such so it's worth a shot!

can we sticky this possibly to make it so its easier for everyone to see?

also, welcome to the forums to anyone new, but there is a topic in the fender lounge to introduce yourself.... its great the community is growing so fast, but we don't need everyone to make a thread introducing themselves and cluttering up the discussion here on stratocasters

Yes, I agree this thread is long over due. I understand that buying a guitar is a tough decision and some may want advice, but the players have to make the decision themselves. What works for others or me may not work for the one that's looking to purchase a guitar, due to style, technique and so forth. Such a personal item to express yourself, you sure don't want to make the wrong choice.

One should take their time choosing the proper guitar.

Make sure it feels good in your hands. ALL the notes on every string ring out. When bending a note to a different pitch make sure it doesn't choke out- end quickly.

I vote this becomes a sticky!!

Job well done citizenerased!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks and great advice, like he said, try every string out, make sure the action is good and it is set up properly.... you don't want to get home to find your guitar has fret buzz or something that could have been addressed when purchasing the guitar

also, check the warranty the seller gives you if the guitar is new... you want to make sure its one you feel comfortable with, one which gives you a period to feel that the guitar is well built and a "keeper"

another, when buying used, make sure you ask the seller all the questions you need to know... it may seem deliberate, but you really need to make sure they arent ripping you off... ask for any original documents that came with it, and try to get a serial number and verify it on the particular companies website... always plug it into an amp as well and make sure the electronics are in proper working function.... really look close for anything that could be harmful down the road, it is an investment, make sure its a good one

also, to everyone, please learn to use the search function in the top of the page.... you can read some past threads which may give you enough insight to not even need to make a thread
