My baja tele. I dont like the thick yellow finish that seems to hide the beauty of the ash grain. Whilst adjusting the neck earlier i had a close look at the neck pocket. There appears to be a tinted clearcoat straight onto the timber.

You can just see the tint around the edges of the pocket.

Hi Niki: it's probably vinyl sealer, or at any rate a washcoat of lacquer, prior to the build coats. I haven't checked the specs: I presume the Baja Tele has a polyester finish?

Howsabout taking some T-Cut to it and very gently working that paint a little thinner in a nice controlled way?

Cheers - C

Would T-cut work really? A more exposed grain is exactly what im after. I cant see the point of a stained finish on the guitar as it could well be 3 or more peices. As for a polyester finish its highly likely. The guitar weighs just under 10 ilbs.

Hmm i may try t-cut on the mexican strat before i go onto this.

Just checked: yes, it's a polyester finish on the Baja's body. So if you seriously want to take that finish thinner you may like to have at it with some wet-and-dry first. Coarse grades, then finer, finishing off with the T-cut for fine tuning and a high gloss.

Mind you, I'd be amazed if you actually need to be told any of that, young Ninja!

Trust me mate at best i'm a have a go hero type. Finish wise i know very little at all.

Like i said im gonna try it on the MIM strat tommorow. At worst its only going to need respraying, at best it will thin the finish further. I could learn something as i do it. As i told the missus 'dont knock it, it keeps me entertained and out of trouble'.

I believe that I've only ever heard our UK brothers refer to "T-Cut." Is that a UK brand of polishing/rubbing compound?

Asked and answered thanks to www.autoexpress.co.uk .

Thats the one mate. You can buy it with various shades and tints added now. It could produce some unusual results.

Hey, really? OK, noted. I'll try to be more international in my terminology in future.

The things I've learnt today: pedestrian crossing = crosswalk. T-Cut is not in America...

Ninja- I would use AirCraft Remover to take the poly off and refinish with '52 Tele Butterscotch Nitro.

Aircraft Remover:

This professional grade paint stripper is fast acting and will effectively remove finishes from the metal surfaces of automobiles, trucks and cycles. It is effective on acrylics, lacquers, polyurethanes, baked enamels and epoxies. Non-corrosive to common metals under normal exposure time.

This is the very best way to remove poly. You will barely have to sand at all. Surface-to-air missles not included.

I didn't think that T-Cut was in America. I use a 3M brand of what I assume is the same stuff.

Now, I see that my daughter is eating crisps in the loo. And I said, where the heck do you think you are?
