Recently i´ve aquired a American Deluxe Strat SSS (about two weeks ago) as a treat to myself after all these years after owning a couple of fender guitars the 1st one beeing a Korean butter scotch telecaster new(1996) and a used Japanese mondego black special edition with gold harware strat sss that played like a dream (2000) that i still regret selling it...but hard times required hard measures, oh well better not think about it now.
So i decided to offer myself a brand new american deluxe sunburst strat, because i had been comenting for about a year my intentions my wife resrvd a little surprise for me as well. She ordered the same strat from music store!
So when i got home all proud for aquiring my beautiful american strat, i noticed her expression of dissapointement and after the explanation we decided to cancel and change her order for a brand new Marshall amp.
Because i found it easier to repair a guitar (if needed) on a local dealer than a amp.Well it made sense to me...
Back to the "problem" itself; because i like to use the tremolo quite a bit after test driving the guitar on the shop, the neck felt so confortable the action was great and the sound ,well, the sound was beautiful full rich and cristal clear bass exactly what i wanted and because of the samarium pkup and s1 switch even more so.
So i brought it home and played it 3 hrs in a row and i noticed that it was going out of tune quite a bit(after considering new strigns etc)
So i came her for some advice and my 1st post here was concearning the difference between the LRS nut pros and cons.
I knew that i could change the pkups and get that strat sound i love so much.
So i went back to the shop and exchange the sss for the hss,now after playing for quite a bit the pros are it does not go out tune but the sound is not same(obviously) but that i can fix but the action is much higher than the sss and cant lower it more because of LSR!Or can i?
So now i´m stuck in indecision...
any advice would be welcome.
Thanks in advance and i hope you did not get bored by the all story(lol) and specially for my bad english.
(Maybe i should have kept both guitars instead of the amp because my vox works perfectly and both guitars would fit my playing stlyles perfect, lol.)
Thanks and greetings from sunny Portugal

musilina - timely post since I'm looking at Deluxe HSS and SSS strats now and trying to make a decision. I happened to be playing an HSS at the local shop yesterday and noticed a small gap between the LSR nut and the groove cut in the fretboard. The shop tech. told me that Fender puts a shim in there in case you want the action lowered. I don't know if that's true but if so, you may have a solution. Is there a gap under your LSR nut?

thanks for replying.
well since you caught my attention to it i dont see any gap there but it seems to have 2 very thin separated (under) steel plates(shim??)!! And the carving on the neck looks very imperfect!! i´ll go back to the shop on monday and see what they could tell me.
how can i insert a few pictures here??
If anyone else ownes one please enlight me me/us about it..

I'm not going to go into all the things you can do to change the way it sounds and feels. But i'll just say this....the things you can do to a strat such as straight neck vs relief, shim vs no shim, saddle height, pickup height, trem adjustment, can so radically alter the way it feels and even sounds that if a setup is done to the HSS and done right, you could easily find yourself liking the sound more than the first one and find it plays incredible. the setup is CRUCIAL, and i can't stress that enough. The difference can be such that setup right it can sound and feel like a far superior guitar than when not setup well at all.

Thanks for your comment.
I know that the setup of a guitar is crucial...but the factory set up on the sss came out brilliant! Different necks/nuts doe.
Do you owne a ADS hss?

But you don't necassarily wanna take it back if it's just the setup. Could be the better guitar once setup right. No, i don't even know what ADS is, tho i do have 2 HSS strats. I really prefer them because they are so much more versatile, and even my fav strat tone, bridge and middle is not only possible, but i've found that wired a certain was i actually get better quack than i usually do with all singles. So i say keep the HSS and make it work. If you can set it up yourself you can then decide whether it's still not as good and return it w/o taking a loss on the setup.

Oczad. I believe Musiluna is refering to the american deluxe. The hss thing doesnt come into it that much with its s1 switching. Whilst it doesnt nail humbucker sounds it gets as close as 2 stacked single's ever have. Its a very versatile guitar.
You are right though a good guitar and a bad guitar set up badly can reverse rolls when their both setup correctly.

I´ll try and set it up the way i want it the issue now regards how much can i lower the nut.
it is indeed a very versatile guitar that is one of reasons as well why i brought it home with me i can skip from srv o heavyer sounds in a flash.
anyway going to the experts on monday and gather more info.
thanks

I think fender cut it pretty close with their nut cuts. Infact my baja tele was cut too low from new.
With unlimited time and patience you can lower the saddle to give as low a action as you like. My mexican strat currently sits at around 1.5mm at the 12th fret. Its taken years to get it like that though.

Ok, well, i had a AM deluxe and if you intend to keep the SCN setup then all i can say is see how you feel down the road. maybe you will feel different, but after some time i felt they missed a lot and after installing some real SC's and a HB i like in the bridge it was a big improvement. I could never get used to that neck tho so i sold it. It also sounded sorta thin to me. If it had more meat both in the sound and the neck i'd likely have kept it because it really did have a very good stratty sound. i think the thin-ness was likely due to the thin neck. that was the thinnest neck i ever came across on a strat.

Musiluna. You need to open a photobucket account and upload the pictures from your computer to photobucket. Then if you hover the cursor over the picture you want on photobucket you will see a number of codes appear. Select the one that begins with Copy that code and paste it into your post here.
