I used these long ago and tried a set for the first time in years last nite. Heres what happened, and i'm not sure if it was me or what. But i have 2 strats that sound different as strats go, but when playing them in a band mix or jamming to tunes on the PC as i did last nite, they sound close enough so that they both cut the same and all that. Subtle differences. so when i put one down and pick the other up i get that subtle difference but they basically cut the same and work equally as well in a sound mix. So i'm playing my main strat last nite with SIT's and just running thru a bunch of tunes on the PC. Something doesn't seem quite right, but i just attribute that to the typical differences in my hearing, how i'm feeling that nite etc. you know how that goes. But it really seems like more. The tone isn't cutting thru and i can't hear myself, so i turn up slightly and then i'm ytoo loud. No amount of amp tweaking will allow me to get a good blend. It's just too lacking in brightness/articulation. Wondering how my ears could be that off i decided in mid tune to swap strats to my other one with the D'addarios i've used for years. Wham ! Instant cut, perfect blend, without exaggeration nite and day !

i can't do this all the time because i have people living above me and can only do it when they aren't home. So i cannot just give it another try today. so i wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience with SIT strings. I have never noticed such a huge tonal difference between 2 brands of strings before, and i will have to further test them. But right now it looks to me like these strings are to blame.

I haven't read all the responses here so please forgive me if I'm being redundant. Granted I haven't used them in many years either but my experience with SIT's was the same as yours....right out of the package they were just a very flat sounding string with no life at all. At the time I had used Slinkey's and had gotten these on sale for dirt cheap and figured that maybe they were just older strings or something but after talking with -a lot- of people, virtually everyone said the same thing...just not a very good sounding string.

Again I haven't used them in years now...I use GHS almost exclusively for all my electrics and I suppose it's possible that something could have changed over the years but it seems as though that whatever formula they use to make SIT's so that they do "stay in tune" is probably the same reason they also don't sound that good...to me at least.

Anyways, just my $.02 worth,
Jim

I have used SIT strings on most of my guitars for over 30 years with great results - on everything from my vintage Fender lapsteel to my Dime Razorbacks. With "other brands" I always bought 2 sets per re-string because I was consistently breaking the plain strings just putting them on, so it was useful to have a spare set for later.

The lapsteel has had the same .012-.052 set for about 10 years now , so I guess I should change them soon just in case. On my other electrics I use SIT .008-.036 nickel-wound. Even considering the very light gauge , they handle a lot of chicken-pickin & Floyd Rosing and my SIT .008s rarely break.

I use the nickel-wound strings for my guitars because they are less abrasive to the frets than stainless . Their steel-wound strings do sound brighter, so if you are used to a stainless wind, nickel-wound would sound quite different by comparison - regardless of brand. I recently put steel-wound SITs on my 2 main basses and they still sound very bright months later!

Their "Power Wound" and "Power Groove" are nickel-wound, the steel-wound is called "Power Steel" which does sound much brighter. I've used all 3 , "Power Wound" is my regular string since it gives less fret wear.

SIT makes a wide variety of strings in different styles - one of them will fix you up !

The fact that I use super-hardend steel pick, might have something to do with why I break so many strings, then again, maybe not. If this were true, then I would break any string that I played on no matter what.
Everyone has to go with what works for them, and I respect that.

I probably break one string a week and I exclusively use the Dunlop Tortex .50s.

As for strings, I'm another D'addario devotee and use nothing but their .12s on my acoustic. I use Ernie Ball Custom Slinkies (.10s) on my electric guitars.
