I hate them, so a long time ago I decided to take them off both of me guitars, they both work great still and are a lot better to tune.
anybody else?

I don't have strong negative feelings towards the string trees.

Did you have to adopt any tuning post winding tricks?

I haven't removed the string tree from mine, but I've never used it. I just make sure the B and high E strings have length enough to wind around so the string wraps as close as possible to the top of the post. That way, the string stays in a more-or-less straight line from bridge to tuner and I have few (if any) tuning issues. I gave it a go with the tree recently and had instant problems with the strings catching and binding, so I'll be remaining tree-free I think.

I would not take the string out of the trees because it maintains the downward pressure of the string in the nut and helps with the effect the nut has on creating the sound down thru the neck.

with locking tuners the idea is to have the minimum amount of string around the peg so it wont slip and stretch causing tuning issues. on my strat the string doesnt even go around the peg one full revolution. without the string tree i think tuning would be a lot less stable in this case, so i would never take them off.

regardless, i cant see any reason to have negative feelings toward them, if they help you excellent, but if you dont think they do, they still dont cause issues.

If that string tree was not a nessary item needed for that guitar to play correctly you can bet that Fender would not put it on there. Why would they spend money and time to put it there when not needed is what you have to ask yourself ? My conclusion is that it has to be there for the guitar to play as it should.

I tried taking one off my Squier, and it the strings buzzed like crazy. So I put it back on.

I use them on the guitars that came with them. But given the option (aftermarket necks that arrive without a stringtree screw hole readymade) I prefer to use staggered tuners and remain tree-less.

One less place for friction to occur and potentially interfere with return to pitch after bending or whammy use. Never once had a string jump out its slot on the nut.

A minor issue, but...

Cheers - C

Well, I think it's not vital if you make plenty of extra winds on the post, it sounds the same to me.
