Ok, so i know not everybody likes John Mayer. Thats cool, you dont have to, to each his own.

im ready to upgrade (on a budget) one of my strats.

what would be my best pup choice to get a good JM tone? (like his black strat)

i know that he has low output pups in the black strat, i was thinking maybe GFS premium 2 alnico 2, or something similar.

any thoughts, input, ideas, etc?

thanks,
~Jag

Closest pickups I've ever found are the Fender '57/'62s. If you want to hear them, find a Vintage Reissue '57 or '62 and play it.

Yeah those are pretty close. What you can also try is putting in Texas Specials and installing a built in mid scoop in place of one of your tone pots. Since Mayer's pickups(Big Dipper) were discovered when he got a strat with Texas specials that sounded "different." He got the pickups tested and found they were improperly wrapped and the mids were scooped out. I got this info from a forum.

Wiring would be: Master Volume, Master Tone, Master Mid Scoop.

I've never tried it but I can't see why it wouldn't work.
