Two completely different animals. Best advice I can give is go and try both and see which one you like better.

It's personal preference, however, I can get some nice humbucking tones out of my s-s-h Stratocaster. I agree to play both, then decide.

It really depends on what year Gibson guitar you’re talking about because anything newer than 1984 (the Henry Juszkiewicz era and Gibsons move to Nashville) is, for a lack of a better word, garbage. Don’t get me wrong, I am a Big Gibson guitar fan, but I believe the older ones are the best. My latest Gibson guitar was made in 1979 and I would not buy a solid, and I use this word loosely, body electric Gibson guitar any newer than that. The Gibson Corp has scarified the Gibson tradition and reputation (just like CBS did with Fender back in the day) for higher profit earnings. The modern Gibson guitar is a cheap, hollowed out imitation of Gibson of old. And to the people who thought the Les Paul is a heavy guitar, they’re not as heavy as they use to be. When you buy a Gibson today, you’re only buying a name and it sells like hot cakes and Mr. Juszkiewicz knows it too. The craftsmanship and quality is gone unless you’re buying a custom shop Gibson LP, but what starving musician can afford one of those? I am sorry to say Gibson ain’t what they use to be. Thank you for letting me vent.

I have a 1967 SG and its great. It's got an amazing neck and it sounds like nothing else. Even though its a really nice guitar, I like my Strat better. Neither one is really the same as the other. I use them both for different things. I wouldn't get rid of either. Just play a lot of the guitars you might buy, and let the guitar pick you.

All I have are Strats now, but I have owned two Gibson SGs and I liked both a lot but my Strats are king with me. I prefer the longer scale length of the Strat and of course the tremolo. THe SG doesn't have the right balance for me either. They were both headstock heavy.

well i like the strat's clean tone (i'm pretty much a john frusiciante style junky :) ) and like someone else said that a hss strat has a humbuck tone. but it all depends on you and what music you play! try both (and if you have enough green get both  )

There is no comparision in my mind. I would think the comparison for the SG is the Tele and for the strat it's the Les Paul. You can get so many more sounds and tones from the strat than the SG. Want the humbucker option, by an HSS. In the end the choice is what feels and sounds best to you and the style you play.

Chet Is right! try'em out before you buy'em...
But Notice the difference in the neck I usually play the Sg as Rythme guitar because it feels better in the low-tone frets,
And I love to play a strat when I'm soloing the thin neck alows you to reach more with less manouvres :D
(that's just my opinion)
But go check it out for yourself :p

the sg is the only gibson that i can stand. it sounds great, it looks killer, but it doesn't play well. the neck is thin enough to be fast playing, but the fretboard is wide. personally, i find it too wide to play comfortably.

also, Gibson (and many other companies) use the 24.75" scale length, and they cram between 22 and 24 frets onto it. so, by the time you get to the upper register, the space between frets is tiny.

Fender uses a 25.5" scale, and puts 21 or 22 frets on it. the bottom line is, less frets on a bigger scale makes the guitar more comfortable to play on. sure, you may not be able to hit those really high notes, but who really uses them anyway? 21 frets is plenty for most guitarists.

overall, the sg has some good features, but the strat is a more well rounded guitar. or that is my opinion.

And if you're interested, Gibson makes a 3 single coil version of the SG. A strat with a mohagany body and Gibson neck.
