I'm thinking about getting an amp that will be able to cover most of these bands? Aerosmith, The Beatles, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Cheap Trick, CSN, Deep Purple, Dire Straits, The Doors, The Eagles, ELO, ELP, Eric Clapton, Genesis, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Satriani, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mother Love Bone, Neil Young, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, The Police, Porcupine Tree, Queen, The Rolling Stones, Rush, Santana, The Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Supertramp, Temple of the Dog, U2, Van Halen, The Who, ZZ Top etc.

Tone wise I like David Gilmour, Santana, SRV, Hendrix, Brian May, and Clapton

I was thinking about these two amplifiers:

You need a marshall plexi and a good power attenuator. Neither engl or vox sound like those players.

Both decent amps, but neither sound like the majority of bands you listed.

I'd try a Marshall as well, maybe a Rectoverb.

Covering other people's music is more about learning to play it, not what gear you use.

But the list you've presented? Every conceivable kind of amp has been used by all these performers.

So go find one that responds to your touch, makes you want to play and sounds good to you. You can't buy an amp that will make you sound like all those people. That's just going to take many years of practice.

I probably should have mentioned this. I'm looking for an all tube amp that is under $1500. The reason I kind of stray from Marshall is because I'm not really infatuated with their clean sounds. I want shimmery cleans with a British distortion. I also don't need something that's really high gain or high wattage. 50 watts around.

I know I got to try them out. This is just online research really. I won't be buying a tube amp any time soon, I just want to get an idea of what's out there. I play proficiently enough and I know it's not about the equipment, it's about the player  I just want a good tone, that's all.

Me, I prefer to build my own rig with a rack setup. Find the tube power to be the heart of your rig(I choose the mesa 50/50 and could not be more happy). Then look for a good speaker cab(I love my Marshall 1960 AV). From there you can plug in any preamp to nail your tone down. If you get sick of your tone, all you need to do is look into preamps, or get several of them. Then you can plug your preamp into almost any amp and find your tone from practice or traveling and using unfamiliar amps.

I love the customization and flexability.

A fewyears ago I seen that Randall is making a all tube combo amp with removable and replaceable preamp modules. Very flexable and customizable all in the size of a 2x12 tube combo. Check it out:

They still make those. That's not a bad idea. I know someone who uses one, but recently it failed at his last show. (He's not that bright, and didn't bring a back up.) When working, it sounds great live.

Thats why you need a 59plexi or jtm45. Their very different amps to marshalls current offerings. A 1959 is about the cheapest option youve got for getting a base for early blackmore, gilmour, clapton, hendrix and a load of the other names you mentioned.

You could check out the Epiphone So Cal 50. It's been called the "poor man's JTM 45."

Randall licenses that modular tech from Bruce Egnater. If you want massive flexibility, check out an Egnater Tourmaster. If you dn't need that much juice, play a Rebel and see if that doesn't do it.

check out the Ceriatone amps http://www.ceriatone.com/index.htm
and if you don't want to build them yourself just check out the "cabinet" option of each amp....

Is this what you're talking about?

I would love to go to a place that has all sorts of different amplifiers, but all I got as far as a local music store is guitar center. Maybe I'll go to a NAMM show since I live in Southern California. I'm sure they have everything there.
