Hi everybody,

My name is Chuck and I'm new on this forum. I'm a cabinet maker(or woodcrafter?) and I would like to make my own Fender Stratocaster. My question is: Where can I find the exacts dimensions, mensurations of the all guitar (body, neck, plate etc). I've searched it and i've never found it.

thank you and sorry for m english :P

I think you will struggle unless you can find a strat to measure. Fender wont just give those details away.

Yeah, just take a measure and go to the next music store or ask a professional guitar builder.

Or you can just buy a complete set of plans from these guys, and learn a bunch while you're at it.

Hey SlapChop: good link.

***

Hi Clapton2424, I mistakenly bought Martin Oakham's book (top of this page) because it supposedly comes with plans for a Strat:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_gw_1_ ... n+Electric

In fact, his plans are subtly but distinctly different in dimensions to a Fender Strat, no doubt for copyright reasons. In the end I made my router templates by closely measuring a modern American Standard Strat. If you study these things you will discover that things like the jack and control cavities and the body contours have slightly changed over the years in their exact dimensions and shapes, so which Strat you use as a model will determine what you end up with.

BTW, regarding books, they all have their strong and weak points and there is no single one to recommend. Martin Oakham's book has some useful stuff, including lots of good clear step-by-step photos. However, more feeble than the imagination can encompass on the subject of finishing!

The next two books down that Amazon page would be at the top of my "recommended" list. Melvyn Hiscock's book is a very good introduction, covers most of the bases and will get you a long way down the road.

Martin Koch's book is much more idiosyncratic but as a cabinet maker you will appreciate many of his original and neat solutions to home-builder's problems. He has a particularly tidy method for using a router to create a compound radius fingerboard, for example...

All three of those books will help you a lot - though they all have a way of running out of detail just where you need it. Neck shaping, for instance...

I suspect you'll be able to fill in the gaps for yourself.

Best of luck - and let us know how you get on, why not? Lot's of folks here very interested in this stuff...

Cheers - C
