Hi stratohawk: I've somehow missed this thread till this minute. Wow, I simply love that color! It must have a name, or at least a color code on the can. I'd be most grateful to know what it is if you felt like posting.

Tell me, did you use aerosols or spray with a gun? And would you mind saying how much of the color paint you used?

If I were you I couldn't bear to knock it around after all that finishing work, but that was the project you set yourself.

I bet you're feeling good about it right now? It's gonna look great under lights...

Congratulations. What's the next project?

Cheers - C

thanks Ceri. for the color and clear i used a small 4.9 cfm gravity feed spray gun with a 250cc paint cup. my primer and sealer were out of aerosol cans. as for the color i got it at a sherwin williams auto paint store but I'm not telling you the code lol ok so its 4th dimension brand code 5B-59388 00(B). as for the amount i don't remember the exact amount but i can tell you i barely put a dent in a pint can and that's with adding reducer. i filled my cup to about 4 or 5 ounces or 125-150 ml and had some to spare actually almost enough for 2 or 3 more coats better to have to much than not enough. and i will tell you this it was a blast doing this project and I'm still not done with it quite yet i am feeling really good about it and I'm starting to plan out my next project witch will be to make a strat that looks just like this one

this is mike mccready's (pearl jams lead guitar player) number one its a 59 slab board all original. one off note if you really don't know how good mike is look him up on youtube you'll find more than just pearl jam stuff like experience hendrix were he plays killing floor with great blues solos or him doing voodoo chile better than most imo. sorry about the plug i just feel that mike is way underrated and gets looked over to often in mags.
anyway this project is going to be put off for a couple of months till i recover from being layed off for 5 weeks im back now. its also going to be hard to find a true full nitro body and and nitro fat 59-62ri neck. and relicing a body to look like that isn't going to be easy I'm going to spray a piece of plywood to practice some techniques Ive got in mind. that's all for now
thanks again
Chris

Hi Chris: well, as far as the body is concerned have you thought about going the route of something like this?:

http://www.wdmusic.com/unfinished_strat ... odies.html

(Or one of the many other suppliers of those things.)

It's obvious that your finishing skills are up to it...

Anyhow, when you get round to it, please show us your work in progress. Amazing level of interest in this stuff on this Forum.

Cheers - C

hi Ceri yes Ive been seriously considering buying a unfinished s-s-s alder body and painting the burst my self but if i do that i'm going to need cut out a couple of plywood blanks and practice painting a burst i do think this will be the route i take as painting my own burst could be very satisfying but I'm afraid that if the burst comes out great ill have a very hard time relicing it as it was hard enough to start relicing this body when it was done cause it looked so nice and clean so I'm now considering painting another body this color and leave it nice because i love this color its way nicer in person than it looks in the pics especially in sun light. but i also want to buy a alder body with a flame maple cap and dye or stain it so who really knows witch one of these 3 projects will be next but i will start one of them this spring and post the whole process thanks again for all the comments
Chris
ps. hey Ceri stand up job on your body love it you did a great job from wood work to paint

Haha - yes, after all that work I'd find it very difficult to get brutal with it! A reason I couldn't do this for a living: it would break my heart to put all the effort into making a perfect finish and then have some guy bring it back later and proudly show how he'd wrecked it...

I can believe that: it's so hard to get a photograph to do justice to the real thing, colorwise. Must say, that color looks excellent in the pics. If it looks even better in person then it must be knockout!

BTW: If you shoot a couple of layers of clear between each stage of a sunburst then if there are mistakes / oversprays it is quite easy to sand them back without breaking into the previous color layer.

However, the staining is the thing you need to practice on scrap first, if you haven't done it before. That's where nasty surprises can crop up, and once the stain is on the timber there's little to be done to correct it if it didn't work right. Don't try it for the first time on an expensive flame cap!

Very best of luck - and take plenty of pix!

Cheers - C

I'm not a big fan of relic-ing, but I have to say that does look nice, great color. I like the 'chameleon" effect. Gonna look great under the lights.
And, Ceri, you're right. There is an amazing amount of interest in this type of post. You're the one who got me interested, watching your project. I've always wanted to try something like this, I just don't have the patience. Great job(s), all of you!

the nice thing about staining is Ive had lots of practice staining expensive trim in big houses with my job of both drywall finishing and painting but i do have a few pieces of flame maple trim that i will use to pick my color
thanks for your input Ceri when i do paint a burst i'm going to use your idea of clear between colors cause Ive decided to not relic the first burst i paint. i think one relic strat good for me
