Hello Folks,
This is my first time here. I usually haunt the Kramer, SD and Harmony-Central forums. Here is my question. I know that Japan floyd rose strats had contoured heels and were made of Basswood. Did all the Japan floyd strats (not Squires) have the contoured heels? How would I ID this as not being a squire body?

Thanks for your help
Scott

i'm pretty sure the model name is contemperary series. i have an 85,green,with cord insert on the bottom (side).w/2 humbuckers only, black lacquer neck and headstock 1 volume knob,1 tone knob w/dual pickup control(there is a position on the tone pot that changes which pickup is being adjusted). oh and a three position switch . also a floyd rose . this guitar almost plays itself. as guitars that cost a grand should. my contour on the heel ? dont know if it is squireish or not. there is some material removed at the location where a right forearm would rest. approx. starting at the straplock and going upwards, to even with the bridge on the top edge of axe. there is noticable contour action going down.

this one could be discerned from the squire by a cord jack on the side (bottom), and the body was cut for 2 p-ups. there you have it thanks, Darren

The body is a top route SSS config and a recessed floyd route, but the neck pocket isn't contoured. The seller isn't saying if it's a Squire or not and has no serial number.

Hi Dramaramamamajama: that's the forearm contour you are talking about. I believe phreddy is refering to the shaping of the heel below the neck pocket, where the neck plate goes. Like on an Am Deluxe.

I'm afraid I don't know anything helpful about that on Japanese guitars. I've been watching this thread in the hope of learning something...

Cheers - C

Yes I was talking about the heel. Sorry for the confusion.

If it has a stock Floyd Rose it would be a Hot Rod with 2 single coils and a damarzio humbucker. They made them in the early 90's and used the 50's and 60's RI bodies.

The MIJ Contempary's had Kahler Trems and came in like a half dozen version's from one humbucker to two and even a few with two singles and a bucker with the TBX contol but no Floyd Trem's

I have a HRR 50's MIJ and have owned several. Those are the ones with the contour neck heel for easy fret access to the high notes. I've seen several people on Ebay try to list the Squier version of this guitar as an HRR or not mention that it's a squier at all. The floyd rose squier had a Floyd Rose II as opposed to an Original Floyd Rose. Also the squier only had 21 frets, only two knobs and a rectangular neck plate. More importantly the squier had a "Floyd Rose Squier Series" decal on the head. I've seen people erase these.

There were previous MIJ's that had a Kahler trem. In fact even the HRR's originally had a Kahler.

Hope that was helpful.

The mid 80's Contemporary's had Schaller Trems. There were 3 Versions used.

I have a Strat from the 90s that came with an actual Floyd Rose bridge. Still have it its a great guitar. It's been modified, the Floyd Rose had been locked but recently unlocked it and restoring it.

Note that Strat was sold new like that, well not with that paint but with that Floyd Rose tremolo yes.
