i am looking at an american strat, circa '97.

the neck looks original, but my question is on the body. my buddy has a 60's strat and it weighs a ton. this other guitar seems lighter. is there a way to tell if this body is not a fake?

Different guitar bodies will weigh different weghts. My roomate has a '91 Strat that weighs a ton. Great guitar. I own 4 Strats and they all weigh different weights.

Some Factors:
density of the wood
moisture content
finish

I guess the only reason I am asking is because I ran across a strat with a neck that said Made in USA (it was authentic), bolted to a body that clearly was not a fender body. It looked like a fender strat "type" but so was not a Fender.

Of course, they were asking for top dollar. All the hardware on the body was very cheap looking and the body had slightly different shape than a strat, with the pickguard a completely different shape. Had I not picked up on this, I might have bought it. Of course, someone did a few days later.

If possible, take the neck off of the guitar and check the neck pocket for any Fender identification. Guitars can vary greatly in weight. I wouldn't dismiss it as a fake just from it being light.

My American Deluxe ash body is heavier than my Clapton Alder body. Both are American.
