I want to upgrade my son's squier strat. It is the one that comes in the beginners package. I don't want to throw a lot of money into it, but I can's afford a $500 guitar right now.

Question is can I drop in a set of Tex Mex pickups or Amercian Standard pick up in this Squier? Will the Squier electronics handle the output for thiese pickups.? Someone told me the out put of the squier is 250K, I hae not idea if that means anyghing.

If the squier electonics do not handle these pickuks what about getting a loaded amercian standard pickguard?

Thanks tony.

As long as you are exchanging single coils for single single coils, and/or humbuckers for humbuckers you are okay. The electronics will work fine.

Another consideration is also MIM Std ceramics pickups. These pickups are also quite good, and you can likely get them for real cheap on eBay.

And the "250k" ... this is the resistance of the pots in Ohms. Generally, 250k is for guitars with single coils, and 500k if it has humbuckers.

I dropped a set of Texas Specials into my Squier and it sounds like a whole new guitar.

Tex Mex are great. I have them in my '04 MIM Std. Very affordable, too.

I played a guitar with Tex-Mex pickups and there's a difference. To me the Texas Specials have a thicker, warm tone (very SRV-like if you play them through a tube amp with an overdrive pedal) and the Tex-Mex pickups have a brighter, vintage strat kind of sound. They both sound great, though. If you can't find a guitar with Texas Specials for your son to play, try going on youtube and finding videos of people playing who have them in their guitar. I didn't have the opportunity to play a guitar with Texas Specials before I got them, and it was comparing audio clips and videos online that made me want to get them. I was a little worried about it, but I'm really glad I went with them, they're the best sounding pickups I think I've ever played. They make my $99 guitar sound like a $900 guitar. Of course, it still doesn't play like a $900 guitar, but for the price the combined price of $300 for the Texas Specials and Squier I can't complain.
