After years of not touching a guitar, I dug out a Fender Strat we've had stored away for at least 10 years so I can get back to learning to play. Hopefully, at age 57, I still have time. I took lessons years ago but it really amounted to 8 consecutive 1st year guitar lessons due to my practice schedule (or lack thereof). At that time, I had a candy apple red MIA Strat but that went off to eBay land during some tough times.. I'm hoping to replace it with a MIM 60's Classic Strat when $ permit..

Anyway, the Strat case still had the original receipt in it. We bought it back in February of 1986 for $350. (That makes the new prices seem not so bad, considering our purchase was 23 years ago...) The E-series serial number indicates its a MIJ Strat built in 1985. It needs a little cleaning up but other than that, it looks pretty nice! A few dings in it but, hey, they charge extra for that nowadays... Wish me luck -- I'll need it..

My favourite colour. Upload a picture from your computer onto photobucket. When you hover the mouse cursor over that photo on photobucket a list of codes will appear. Copy the one that starts with and put it into your post on this site and your picture will appear.

Welcome to the Fender Forum. You aren't too old.

I started playing in 1972 when I bought an acoustic - I still have it - but a year after I got it, life interrupted and it got laid aside. Two years ago, I retired and I decided to re-learn the guitar. So I bought myself a Squier '51 and several months later I picked up a Squier Standard Strat. I was 62.

I now have 4 guitars including the 36-year old acoustic which I still play.

And yes, I'm a re-beginner, and my hands aren't that great - but I'm playing guitar and having lots of fun doing it.

So hang-in and play along - it's a wonderful thing - music that is :P

Wont be long before you're jamming to your favorites. Practice is all you need to become a good player. That's how the greats did it, what if they had given up? I believe George Thorogood started to play late in life.

Hi oldguy101: Fifty-seven? You're a young stripling - get rockin' and enjoy yourself!

BTW: a 1985 Japanese Strat is likely a very nice guitar indeed. Not second best by any means: we'd love to see pictures!

Good luck - C

Hey OG a fellow 57 year older here.

I started up again after a 40+ year lay off. Still have my Epi Granda E444T that I started on. Just bought a Schecter, but now I'm looking for a Strat! Started fooling around with tabs, but I think I'm going to need lessons if I ever want to get any good (and I do).

Rock on old People!

Well, I guess I'd be one of your peers then, my friend. I'm well into my 50s myself and although I started when I was 12 and never put it down, I've found that I enjoy playing the most now since I took myself out of all the competitive aspects. Meaning, although I don't play out any more where I had to constantly strive to improve and learn as quickly as possible, I can now just sit back and, "do my thing", for better or for worse - No pressure, just enjoying my trusty Stratocaster(s). Sure, I'll jam every now and again but the key phrase here is, "my choice". Besides, I don't have that emaciated space rat persona any longer. Rather, I'm currently with the FBI: Fat, Bald and (musically) Indigent.

Enjoy!

Hey, thanks everybody for the encouragement -- good to hear I'm not the only old guy here. I put new strings on the Strat last night, tuned it up, plugged it into the amp and, wow, it all worked! My amp (Johnson JT50) has been sitting for a LONG time and I was kinda wondering if it would still be okay. n So far, it sounds fine. Actually, I'm a little surprised the MIJ Strat sounds so good. I was figuring on swapping the pickups for Texas Specials but, right now, I'm satisfied with the originals..
