I read somewhere that hybrid amps sound almost like tube amps, almost to the point where you can't distinguish one from the other. I have a Vox Valvetronix AD30, a hybrid amp, but I never had a lot of experience with a tube amp so I can't make my own estimation. So what do you guys think? Is this an over exaggeration or is it true?

Yes, you can, but it's a minor difference. Nice amp choice.

Guitar straight into the amp tranny a/b'd to valve with no effects added including reverb and gain. With the amp in the same room as the assessor so theres no mixing desk or mike to cloud things. Then yeah most guitarists of reasonable experience could. As soon as you start recording or throwing effects on things become more indistinguishable. I like hybrid amps. Get one with a good valve pre-amp and good power section and you get the best of both worlds. Your never going to get power amp sag but neither do most valve users with anything bigger than a 15watt.[/list]

Of all the "hybrid amps", I like the VOX AD series the best. I own one too.

HOWEVER....the amp has one little 12AX7 tube in the front end, and this makes it a hybrid? Secondly, YES, yes, and YES...there's a huge difference between an modelling amp and a pure vintage or boutique all tube amplifier. Once you educate your ears, and really get into high end transformers, really good caps, great circuits, hand made point to point wiring vs. circuit boards, and proper speaker selections, the difference is stunning.

I would NEVER. ever trade tone gotten from an old Fender blackface, tweed, or a good boutique amp like a Matchless, Bogner, Trainwreck, Dumble, or Dr. Z for any VOX AD series. It's not even close.

Tube amp sound changes so much as the volume increases were as to me the hybrid does not change as much it just gets loader.

It's fair in principle if comparisons are trying to be made. It's unfair in the results. I don't care about mass produced amps. Don't want them. I heard the difference between tube amps from the 50's and 60's and the amps of the mid 70's and on even back then. So did a lot of other people, and they still do. That's why boutique amps have a market. That's why companies are re-issueing amps at great cost, some of them hand made. That's why the originals are desired in studios around the world, and by live players alike. That's why the vintage market is hot.

It should take 31 years to have this all figured out.
