A Clean boost and heavy pick attack will fatten up your sound!

A good OD pedal will give a nice boost to something like the MT-2. I would set my DT Blues Screamer before the MT-2 with the gain set between a quater and half-way. When I hit the MT-2 with the Blues screamer, well, it was awesome.

You have to tweak a little to find what you want, but you can get a good, heavy sound out of it.

Mesa recto does the trick for me.

If I want a humbucker-type sound from my strat I step on a Keeley DS-1 distortion. It's a modded Boss pedal that sounds great, is very flexible, and much less expensive than a Mesa recto! ;-)

There are often copies available on ebay for a decent amount, give it a search!

use a chorus, or a delay set to an extremely short delay.

it'll fatten it up nicely.

Try a Sonic Maximizer or slight compression.

I own a Clapton Strat and it seems to do the job.

I bought Fender's FM combo amp (25 watts is plenty loud for me at home) for just that reason. I can play acoustic on a clean 1st channel, or metal on the grittier 2nd channel, with several amp and effect settings in between. I play a standard strat, single coils.

Try using more bass and middle, less treble on your amp.
Also use more output-tube overdrive then pre-amp o.d.
Less gain more master.

I know some Boss and Zoom pedals have H > S and S>H emulations.
