I recommend you pick up a copy of the Hal Leonard Guitar Method book. It will give you a structure to your studies, and you'll gain understanding as you practice.

A related book I recommend is Music Theory for Guitarists: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask. It will complement the Guitar Method book very nicely.
