as above. also if oyu see a teacher, ask him/her to help you organize a practice regimen. some teachers just open a book, and then assign you stuff, but you would be well served by developing a schedule for when you practice.

IE, learn how to divide your time.

X amount of time to warm up
X amount of time to review older material
X amount of time to practice learning new chords
X amount of time to practice strum patterns/chord changes
X amount of time for scales

etc.

Don't forget to set aside some practice time for trying something new. devote some time to learning songs. Full songs, and not just riffs, a lot of people fall into that trap. they know a ton of riffs, but no songs.

But structure will definately help you improve at a faster rate.

 Congrats. welcome to your new obsession. Don't think of practicing as a chore think fo it as just playing. It helps me to get in a better frame of mind. also take time to listen to other guitar players this can be a very helpful teaching instrument. also check out local open mic nights to meet other musicians. Have fun and God bless. :P

I wonder if anyone mentioned to practice?

Hope this is useful to you...........My Father is a very very good player
His advise to me was "Son it is better for you to practise 20 minutes a day, every day, than practising 20 hours a day 1 day a week" I found that to be the best advise I could ever have gotten. I now enjoy practising as well as playing! :D

I Started Playing guitar a year ago and I take Professional lessons now , but before I was learning off a DVD and if you want to learn to play good take lessons with some who is good and Has a biography about there playing. If you what to here someone who has been playing a year and practicing 3 hours on saturday and sundays and 2 hours a day during the week for a year than go to my youtube page at www.youtube.com/kevtheguitarkid and then you can decide with someone who takes lessons. Then you can find some one who don't take lesson and then you will know how to learn faster.

Concentrate on technique. Getting into good habits now will reap huge dividends later on. Especially, keep that thumb in the middle of the neck and play each note in a chord or scale with the proper finger.
