Hi
I bought a wonderful used Custom Shop Pro Stratocaster, the one featuring the 70s headstock, 12'' neck radius, locking tuners, SCN pickups and LSR roller nut. I love the feel of that guitar, but the LSR seems to have some problem in that it produces a horribly loud buzz when the A string is played unfretted (open).

All other strings play with no buzz (fretted or unfretted), so my conclusion is that there is an issue with the nut (perhaps too low?). I carried out a detailed visual inspection but everything seems OK.

Any idea what may be causing this and is so, how it can be fixed?

Thanks

I have had this problem on my AM Dlx. HSS. It was caused by the fingers that held the high E string being bent, and then made worse by a tech who tried to repair the nut instead of replacing it. The A and the E became stuck under the bearings and rattled/buzzed horrendously.

What solved it was I had to be very "strong" to the techs at the shop and insist that they replace the nut under warranty.

What has also helped is trying different strings, and using those that are more flat wound - such as GHS Boomers or Burnished Nickels. What has really worked well is .009's and Thomastick - Infeld PowerBrights. It took a lot of perseverence, work, and experimentation, but replacing the nut and searching out for the right strings have really given me a sweet sounding instrument.

BTW, I play it through a HR Deville 410, and am waiting on a Blues Jr. so that I can take it out and jam with friends. Those amp combinations just make it ideal!

I hope this has helped... BD

Got one, no expert on it :)
Those little tabs can be a pain as mentioned,
as is losing one of the little ball bearings when changing strings if you are not careful and bend a tab.

I'd try different strings first. I had mine strung with fender bullets at first while finishing the intonation action neck work. buzzed horribly on A and D. Changed to elixir nanos and it's been fine since. I'm guessing that coating make the wounds smoother over the balls.

That said, I love my LSR, that guitar always stays in tune better than my fender stock nut (even after filing to adjust for 10s and using graphite!)

Good luck!

I've never had a problem with buzzing on any of my guitars that have been fitted with LSR's.
When you did your close visual inspection, did you manage to confirm that the buzz is coming from the nut itself? I'm just wondering if possibly the string may be buzzing from somewhere else?
Also, it should'nt make any difference what type of strings you may want to use with the guitar. Gauge and brand should be the choice of the guitar player IMHO
