You get finishes like that by spraying a jet black undercoat, and then using a bit slower drying colour coat, and throwing some cling wrap over it before it dries, and 'massaging' it before it dries, then the black under coat shows through. easier to do than to explain really. I'm planning on doing something similar on my Ibanez.

It looked like this a couple days ago...

Hi Twelvebar: nice work! If you go ahead with that finish you described what about taking lots of photos and running a thread on it? That's something new to most of us - I'm sure we'd be glad to see it happening, step by step.

Good luck with it, anyhow.

BTW: I wonder what that timber is you've uncovered. Could it be Japanese basswood, I wonder, which is supposedly more pink in color than other Asian varieties...?

Cheers - C
i also think it is Japanese basswod too. i was actually pleasantly surprised at the quality of the wood. And sure i will be taking a ton pf photos as i work on it (and my concurrant black MIM P-Bass to either Lake Placid Blue or candy Apple Red--if I go CAR it will be an authentic finish, the way fender originally did em, dye the body yellow and everything.) If you guys think it is OK to run a thread on an Ibanez here i will put a thread together when i start spraying, but don't want to get on Brad's bad side. I am building myself a spray booth first, no garage, so its going on my deck, i don't expect it to be warm enough to spray 'til close to the end of the month.

I believe (hope) it's fine. Everyone who has run a self-build project thread here is in fact showing non-Fender work. Nobody's ever objected before - and an Ibanez is after all just a Fender Tribute guitar, when all's said and done!

Lots of us be delighted to see threads on any or all of the projects you mentioned. Go for it!

Cheers - C

I think fender negate themselves from guitar build projects by not selling replacement necks or bodies. I generaly agree with their abstinance but think they could make a killing by selling differnetly logo'd replacement parts.
