Hi everybody,

Till sometime ago i was using a multi fx processor for my gigs, but i recently thought of taking my super champ xd with me instead.
I think that it will be enough for what i play but i have a question though.
I can have a clean sound on ch.1 and a dirty on ch.2 , but i just need some more boost for my solos.
Can anybody suggest me what i should use ? I just want 1 single pedal next to my wah which would boost my signal for the solo part, both in the clean and in the distorted mode. Thanks in advance...
Greetings from Greece...

I always found a graphic eq worked best as a boost. Volume boost's such as the duncan pickup booster tend to muddy on driven sounds. A eq can be set to really cut through.

You mean an eq that would go in only for the solo part ? Is there sth that would add some sustain , too ?

If you plug it into the input of your amp and boost with it, it will add sustain by driving the amp harder.

I use my Jekyll and Hyde (which is basically a combination tube screamer and distortion pedal) for solos. I just kick in the Jekyll (tube screamer) side, and if I need more distortion on it I'll kick in the other side too. And I'll usually change pickups from either the neck or middle for rhythm to the middle or bridge for soloing.

I have a MXR Dyna Comp compressor that can double as a clean boost, but I've never used it for that.

I've seen many people use a compressor as a boost. All you have to do is adjust the level on the compressor to be higher than that of the amp. This will give you that boost and also, since it's a compressor, it will give you more sustain.

Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso pedal. Weird name but really good booster. Hand made in USA. Have a Clean boost which won't dirty your sound and give up to 35dB of signal boost. Also has a "Fat" boost which can add a bit of dirt if that's your thing.

Cheers.

Nowadays I just switch pickups, and roll the volume up, but if I was less lazy i would drag out the TS 808 (tube screamer, any model is probably fine.)

It can be. It can do anything from SRV to ZZ Top to Metallica, and it's the only pedal I use live (besides the wah, which I don't use a whole lot). As far as getting real hardcore/death metal type stuff out of it I'm not sure, I've never tried using it for that.

Thanks a lot guys. You really suggested a lot of stuff. It's a pity that i can't try every single of them here where I live.
I think I will go for the compressor though. The only problem is that i think my compressor in y multi fx pedal made the hum from the single coils much louder
Is it true ?
Or just my idea ?
Thanks again guys.

Modtone makes a nice little pedal called the Clean Boost.

A compressor set the way guitar players use them will always increase the noise floor, and it's a poor way to boost signal (that's not what they're for, really). Also, the comp in your multiFX is probably digital, and therefore it sucks. :D BTW, I disagree that a clean boost will muddy your signal. A good one just makes your signal louder... if you're already heavy on low-mids, then you'll get mud. If you're not, you won't.

The best suggestion here is the Catalinbread Super Chili Picoso. Even better for the bucks is Catalinbread's new Serrano Picoso. Premier Guitar described it as a living example of the mythical "More Pedal:" no change in tone, just MORE of it. Up to 30db boost, which is insane.

I know lots of players who swear by the Bad Bob, especially if you're using a simple amp circuit like a 5E3 (tweed Deluxe).

Because I don't care about tweaking the boost, I use an EMG PA-2 on board my Strat. I have it set for a mere 6db of gain (the boost is user-selected, but since the trim pot is inside the guitar, you can't fool with it all the time), and I just hit a microswitch on the pickguard to increase the guitar's output by 6db. This works great for me because all my effects are in the amp's effects loop... if I was driving a pedalboard, and wanted to experiment with various placements of the boost, it wouldn't be such a cool idea, but since I plug straight into the pre-amp, it works great. very economical solution, and with up to 20db of ultra-clean boost, it's plenty loud for metal heads.
