Mine (a late 2005) is not heavy. I've never experienced a heavy alder body. Of course, ash is a different story.

I bought a used 2008 for $400. I love it. I've got a 2008 MIA Tele and have had other MIA Strats. The HWY 1's don't have all the bells and whistles but I like them better. This one is a HSS. I haven't made up my mind if I like the humbucker or not yet. The frets do stick out on the side of the neck more than the standards but not enough to bother me. You don't even notice when playing.

My Highway 1 is lighter than my 2 mid 80's MIJ Strats.

I have an '04 Highway 1 Tele that pretty light and an '02 Highway 1 Strat that's even lighter, maybe the lightest Strat I own. And I've got 6 of them. Not sure why yours is so heavy.

It is not unusial to have a difference in Alder bodies by an easy pound or so.

I have a new FENDER HIGHWAY ONE STRATOCASTER and it isn't heavy at all. It is also my favorite STRATOCASTER ever.

The body you get with your guitar will not weight the same as another identical guitar .. there will be differences in weight .. I guess you can get lighter bodies with a little luck :)

What is a Highway 1 Strat? I have an American Standard (or American series, its a 2002). How do they differ?

I have a 08 Highway 1 and it's not so heavy...
Maybe you're just with a "false perception" due to it's a new guitar for you.
