I normally use DR strings on my LTD and Hellraiser, my MIM strat came with Fender bullets and they feel a bit odd. Is there a brand or gauge that I should go with to get "the strat" sound.

I'm into Van Halen, Hendrix & Clapton sound.

thanks much

FWIW and although I don't keep up on such things, as I remember, Clapton uses Ernie Ball Slinkies and Super Slinkies (10s and 9s, respectively); Van Halen uses Ernie Ball Super Slinkies but substitutes the 3rd string's gauge from .016 to a .015 and the 6th string's gauge from .042 to a .040. Hendrix used a LaBella .010 gauge set if whatever guitars he had lasted long enough for a string change from the OEM Fender 12s.

As was already said, you can use anything you want. A tweak of the amp will do the rest.

I had always thought Jimi used Fender Rock n Roll strings.

You guys know way too much about what these famous players used.

What brand of underwear did Jimi, Eric and Eddie wear while playing?

Anybody? Anybody?
None??!

Free ball, Hanes and Fruit of the Loom, respectively. :)

Oh well, I'm sure even those guys knew everything about their own influences.

Well for a red guitar you are only allowed to use GHS Nickel Rockers .010 guage only, its international law, and you don't want the UN deploying the Blue Caps to your house.

Whoa ... not so fast ... you say red but exactly what shade of red? The UN law was revised last month. If it's official "Fender red" then the GHS rule applies, but if it's in the range of fire truck red or candle apple red then the nickel content of the strings must exceed 50% by weight of the other metal content in the strings. We don't want to go and get guys in trouble here ...

Everything in Somalia started because someone used stainless steel strings on a vintage Nocaster!!

I use Fender 150's pure nickle strings, 11 gauge. I'll only use pure nickle now, IMO they have the most organic sound, and I use fender ones because of the string gauge's that come with the 11 gauge. I find other companies have low E that are just too thick for my taste. But anyway... yeah, nickle strings only for me (not plated)
