I like the EJ Rosewood Strat but I wonder if I should look to a Custom Shop Strat for around the same amount. I'm not married to the EJ Strat so there's flexibility to design features that I would be satisfied with. But, end the end would the Custom Shop be the better quality parts and build? Has anyone made this comparison? Thanks for any opinions.

Well, it depends of what Custom shop you have in mind... I´m not a particular fan of Eric Johnson, but his signature model is quite cool. BUT, since I´m not the biggest fan he has, I´d buy a Custom Shop without giving it a second thought. Yopu could try a ´56 Time Machine Series NOS Two-Tone Sunburst, with Maple fingerboard. The guitar is just BEAUTIFULL. Or you could also get a Custom Classic C Neck Transparent Cobal Blue with Maple fingerboard, wich is also a very, very beautifull instrument.

You can get the Time Machine Series for U$2.331,60 and the Custom Classic for U$2.081,60. I saw them at the GC web site. If I were you I´d go for the Custom Classic C Neck Transparent Cobalt Blue..it´s really beautifull, and certainly just as good as the Eric Johnson Model. But that´s what I would do..

I got a custom classic and there are a few minr things about the guitar i would change namely the neck shape. Its a very minor thing totaly dependant upon my tastes though. The guitar remains incredibly playable despite it not having my perfect set of specs.
There is a inherant appeal to customshop guitars that seems to come from minor attention to detail. The little things i found were the flamed maple neck, the lack of paint where its not needed, and attention to body cutout shapes. There is a marked depth of tonality too despite a few things that are viewed as tone negating. Small old trem block from pre-upgrade days, polyurethane finish. It only leads me to be further inclined to think that a guitars base tone is primarily down to wood quality and craftsmanship.
You do find such qualities on american guitars but have to search for them. If your not a EJ fanboy that must have a guitar with his signature on the headstock you will do better to look to the customshop pieces.

I wanted a knopfler guitar but wasnt crazy about the price for something with some other fella's name on it. I got a similar look and more tonal options from my CS guitar for what worked out to be less money.

For me the neck on the EJ maple seemed perfect, I really liked everything about it, so 'FOR ME' it is the better choice. But no one can make that choice for you.

What is a Custon Shop Team built anyway? A team of people building a guitar is that not what all are? Just seems like a marketing word to me for a guitar they just make in smaller amounts of and may use some higher quality items on. A smaller assembly line product because they limit you to what you can get. A master builder is not doing all the work as you wish its a group putting together parts like what Warmoth does.

Twelvebar ive got just the same thing with my hotrod, the neck shape is perfect. If the customshop had it, it would see my other guitars onto ebay. Sadly sometimes you just cant have it all. :(
Unless you go with masterbuilt to your spec of course. But that costs loads more than i'm willing to pay for wood and metal.
Fhop has it right, waiting for the right customshop piece to come along is the best option and in a few ways the cheapest. Quality that you wont want to modify in any way, at a half reasonable cost for a hand selected instrument.

I agree totally, except in the case of the EJ strat as it pertains specifically to me. The neck fits my hand, the pickups (which aren't available as seperate purchase, just on the sig strats--though I am sure there are some CS pickups that are very similar,)the pickups sound amazing to me, and I have always liked the old style 2 tone burst the best. As you can see I am basically talking myself into buying one lol.

You've no need to validate your preferences here mate. I'm a great believer in guitars appealing to preference. You should see my cheapie Vintage (trev wilkinson brand) greenie model. It gets as much play as anything else in my collection, despite being a pain from new.

There was nothing sweet about it. Despite web reviews the neck was horrible and took extensive hours of fretwork as did the general feel of the guitar due to its rough relic'ing. The electrics are still a source of much debate too. Do i love it, ....yes despite its flaws.

Theres always room for improvement.
