Hi guys.....
I have the possibility to buy a '77 strat, with the big palette, natural color, in near mint condition.
The seller ask to me 2000 euros, approx 2500 US dollars.
Do you, experts, think that is a correct price ??
And, the actual worth can increase with the time flow ??
Thanks for your opinions..... :)

That sounds like an okay price, if it is in mint condition.

I agree, the price is not that bad. I`ve seen vintage guitars on Ebay going for $50 000.

I don't know if a '77 strat can be labeled as "vintage"....
I found on the net that the CBS-era strats, in the experts opinions, are not so good.....
Can anyone explain me ???

I´ll tell you..it´s not a bad price. If a had the chance I´d take it without blinkin´ an eye. I also heard a lot about the 70´s Strats..this is something I really would like to know better..

I have a 72 and it's a great guitar. The quality took a real hit in the later 70's. Be sure it has no quality related issues. Not all 70's CBS guitars were junk.

I'm not expert so I would put more weight on the other responses (and I would certainly speak with a vintage dealer in person who's an expert as apposed to asking on an internet forum), but to me $2500 for a '77 even in mint condition seems -way- over priced. I could see $1500 - $1800 -if- it was absolutely pristine, but no more.

It could just be that I'm "getting old" and that folks now a days see the 70's the way I see the 60's, but unless there was something particularly special about the instrument, I'm not sure I really see the big deal about a '77 Strat...'67, '57 yes...'77...not really.

Just my $.02 worth,
Jim

Thanks to all you guys for your replies...
This is a ( not so good quality...) image of the strat:

I've checked the serial number, and it seems OK.
The "GUITARDATERPROJECT" says:

Quote:
Your guitar was made at the
Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA
in the Year(s): 1977 - 1978

I hope is not a fake......

Sure it is ... it is 32 years old. But the big mistake people make is equating vintage to quality. The fact is that guitar quality back then was much more hit and miss than today. Back then, you had to play the guitar you were buying to make sure you got a good one. That definitely applies to both Fender and Gibson. It was Ibanez that around that time that started to get their quality control sorted out. Anyone remember the Ibanez Artists?? Those were some nice high-grade guitars that were cheaper than its Gibson and Fender counterparts, and played consistantly good regardless of which one you pulled down. Here is a pic of a '77 Artist:

Ciao walrom: I think perhaps the price is a little high. A minute's searching on Google found me a '77 Strat just like yours in natural finish and excellent condition for £1500 (which is almost the same price in Euros). And that is at a dealer, who will be adding a big mark up on the price:

http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/we ... /item/5830

If you are buying this guitar as a private sale then I suspect the cost is on the high side.

Check out more vintage Fenders on this page:

http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/we ... ic-Guitars

That is a well known dealer in London. The modern reissues are at the top, then the real vintage ones run in chronological order down the page. Notice how they get a lot cheaper with each year of the 1970s.

Let us know how you get on?

Bona fortuna - C

Thanks Ceri for your post.
I think I try to reduce the price by speaking with the seller, and also I wish to check the guitar next days, to be sure about it.

I like to much that kind of strat because, when I was young, I had one like this in my home, but it's not mine....:(
And for me, in those years, was like a dream....
I start to play guitar on a copy of a Les Paul Custom, and the strat was simply another planet..... :)

Hi again, walrom:

Well, if he won't come down on the price now you know that there are a couple of very similar Strats to be had in London for 500 Euros less. Come for a shopping visit, why not?

I first liked that natural finish look when I saw Andy Summers playing a guitar just like that. Molto bellissimo...

if you buy it, make sure it's for the right reasons. As a collector, you can always gamble on future worth. As a player... i would suggest you check the latest new gear and see if that is more suitable - the quality of modern fenders is very good at the moment. I would say the current guitars are "collectables" because they are very well built and sound pretty good.

ciao,
johnny.
