I'm probably way to anal about this, but such small changes can change how the in-between posisions sound.
I have heard some really sweet sounding quack and I can get mine pretty darn good in the Bridge and middle position without much effort, but am never quite happy with the neck and middle.

Right now I have the bridge paralell with the middle but slightly closer to the strings.
To get something decent from the other position I have to tilt the neck pickup so that the bass side is a little closer.

Has anyone else had similar experience or any tips?

Some people never pay attention to this and could care less I know, but I love a good quacky sound. I saw a post somewhere where someone said a guitar tech adjusted his pickups for him to better match the levels. I would be horrified if someone did that (ok, I wouldn't because I measure and document everthing... Did I say I think i'm to anal about this :) )

What pickups are you using?

Dimarzio Area 58, but I had the same challenge with true single coils so I figured this would be a pretty generic scenario.

I haven't started messing with my pickups yet -- too busy finding the "sweet spot" with a 3-position switch! I'm surprised by the variation. When it's right, I get a nice squawk going on with what almost sounds like a slight chorus effect.

I found quack is more down to the mid range response of the guitar, of course enhanced by pickups. Focusing of the high mids helps a lot and pot/cap selection for those frequencies is a road of experimentation. Try 1meg pots with a .47 cap, i didnt get enough treble for my tastes but it may work for your rig. Pickup height pays a great part in it too. I find low to mid height pickups works best. My pickups sit about 1/4" down off the strings with the scn'd guitars. The vintage noiseless are 1/16" up off the plate except the neck pickup which is flush treble side and below on the bass side. Lastly experiment with your amp. Ive found that a good quack neck/mid position doesnt sound good with any other position and requires the amp to be adjusted. Bridge/mid position is a little more forgiving.

Thanks nikininja!
Thats exactly the kind of info I was looking for.
Mine has the 5-way superswitch in it, and now i'm wondering if it would help to disable the tone when in the neck+middle position. It's easy to do with this swich and it may unload the pickups enough to boost that upper midrange.
I will let you know if I try it.

Spirit of adventure :) Thats what i like to see. That 'have a go, you never know' spirit.

If your guitars bridge pickup is wired for no tone control it could well work if you switch the middle pickup to no tone.

All the best with it Eddie.
