My fear is that someone is going to walk up to me someday and see my real 65 P-Bass (which is very worn) and say "Hey nice Road Worn P-Bass"
I think I might punch them in the nose :)

Also the hardware on a well played but taken care of guitar usually doesn't look all rusty like it's been stored out in a damp shack. That part doesn't look "Road Worn" to me.

I still just don't understand why people like them. Its a new guitar thats made to look like a old guitar, but you no its not an old guitar. The beat up new guitar has no music played in its background. Its not a well played guitar that sounded so good thats it owner used it often. Used to be when you opened a box and saw a guitar whose finish had some blemish you would not buy it or you work a better deal. Plus there is no way anyone can tell me that making a guitar look old makes it play better thats just not happening. Great playing guitars are the luck of the draw and better models just mean you have a better chance of odds with your draw and looks has nothing to do with it. I played one and I seen nothing special about it in fact they had a Deluxe Player that played much better that was two years old that someone had sold for some cash. Beat part was there was a hold on it and it was a Sweet Red and it was only 519. Hope they change there mind because that will be mine. Back to the Road Worn I can understand why some may want a Worn looking guitar that is a replica of maybe you guitar Heros rig but these are not replicas of anything special. Well I am sure someone in marketing at Fender is smiling with the money made from them but it will not be any of mine because I say give me a well cared for used or new well playing Fender and it history will be real not make beleive. Click your Heels Road Worn Warriors and repeat it's a old special guitar, its a old special guitar, it will be cheaper

I get the 'closet classic' idea. I like the look of aged pickguard etc better than the shiny white new.(personal opinion,) but I don't get the idea of these scarred up guitars. Also i don't get the idea of them offering a ruined nitrocellulose finish, but not a similar guitar with the nitro finish but not wrecked.

There you a go a Closet Classic gives you the old school looking style and and not a make pretend used History which is what they are trying to do with the Road Worn and it does nothing to make the guitar play better.

$1000 was outrageous. Now lets take that 30% price increase that Fender made effective into the picture too...OUCH. :(

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Its just another gutiar that Fender came out with. I like them for what I paid for mine its worth it. They play nice and sound good. Ive had mine for a few days and have been playin the hell out of it. Im not worried about banging it or scracthing it. I paid a little more than 800 for mine with a 10% off coupon. To me thats not bad for a gutiar I want.

Well My thought is if you don't worry about bumping it up why not save the money and spend 600. and get a nice new MIM Classic series? I could not even talk myself into buying a guitar thats fake rough looking so that I can say I don't care if I bang it up. I would still pamper it and care for it and I find it hard to believe that most really mean it when they say they don't care if they bang it. I guess that why they don't give a Hard Case with it your supposed to keep adding damage so why protect it. Its Road Worn just click Your heels and Make Pretend and say ( I worn this out Myself)

I feel strong about this topic because I feel it is a shame that fender thinks just because someone wants a Road used replica of a Famous Artist guitar that they will be able to sell them. And it seems they are but lets see how long it last. A MIM guitar that is a replica of nothing special but some guitar that been around for 20 years and has no musical history whats so ever. Heck I like to have another Chevelle SS like I had in the 70's but I sure would rather have it look new instead of Road Worn I guess thats why I would rather have a Closet Classic. Car wise I guess you would call it a Garaged Classic :D

I don't think that's likely. Here's why: if someone is "wise" enough to know about the Road Worn designation, he/she would probably see that your wear pattern isn't the typical Road Worn pattern.

I hope your wear pattern isn't the same as the typical Road Worn pattern.

You can still get an old American Standard with serious play wear on eBay and elsewhere for less than the Road Worn asking price. While we're on the subject, I see that original silverface Princeton Reverb amps are going for much less than the new PRRI.

this year my gear budget is more focused on recording equipment and software because guitars, amps and FX have just gone outta sight. So far in 2009, my money has gone to Shure, Audio-Technica, and Lexicon. In fact, some of my new home studio gear arrived just the other day.

Well Fenders tryin to sell gutiars so if theres a market for road worn gutiars then why not sell them. If you don,t agree with them don,t buy them. The more gutiars they sell the better for everyone because the prices won,t go up as much. If they don,t sell alot then the price will go up until they quit selling. The road worn gutiar take nothing away from true vintage gutiars. If I spent 30,000+ on a real 60s vintage gutiar I would rather it not be worn out. The road worn is just another inexpensive gutiar however I feel its better than the Standard MIM. To me its about the same level as the 60s classic player which I have also.

I agree with that philosophy, but the fact is that few strats have that nitro finish. And all the "normal" strats will a poly finish will NEVER wear like that. Poly is strong, super thick and will last forever. So the person that plays the hell out of his poly finish strat, fof 8 hrs, every single day, "might" start to see something that resembles a road worn in about 50 yrs - and that's no exagerration. So unless they have the $$$$$$$$$$ for a true vintage, $$$$$$ for a custom shop, or the $$$ for a Road Worn, they'll never have a guitar that looks like that, so they go with the cheapest route.

I agree with you dgonz. I think a finished product w/ polyurethane will last a long time, so this is Fender's acknowledgment of the absence of wear. So for the poser, this may speak of authenticity. For me it's a solid body guitar, so breathability is not an issue. I also like something I spent a grand for will still look good in 10-20 years. I also hate 6-point tremelos, so this product isn't for me. I would like it more if the patterns of wear weren't the same, so each one would be unique. Its obvious that none of these guitars will be collectors items.

I loved the feel of the road worn strat I played. But $1000 for a Mexican Strat is a bit pricy!! It just gave me some ideas of how to do my project strat that I am working on.
