Well, you should be concerned when the humidity goes below 40% for more than a few days. The damage accrues as the dryness continues for extended periods. As you said, in some areas it never happens. In others, it is a continuous battle. All of the music shops here around Denver have humidifiers going almost incidentally. And I have mine on the ready with a humidistat monitoriing for good measure. As I said, this is something that I never thought about in Philly as it is regularly humid. But here in desert-land, it is a must if you want your guitars to survive.

I agree. When in the mountains with 30% humidity, I was concerned, especially after reading all the posts about what can happen. So far....I've been very lucky. I've spent as long as a month at a time up there with no problems. But I usually take my gutars with me, when I head back to the SF area. I also thought about a humidifier up there........but I've seen no damage, so I haven't so far. During the summer, when it doesn't get below freezing in the mountains, I'll leave my MIM Strat there all summer.....still I've had no problems.

Too bad to hear some of the opinions. Like others have said, I'd bet most if not all the fret issues can be attributed to humidity. Fender recommends 40-50% Relative at ~ 70F, as do most mfgrs (Ric, 35-45%). I keep my house at 70F and ~45%. For the guitars. Just so happens to make it more comfortable for the people, too.

I've got an American Deluxe Strat I bought new this summer. Flawless. I'm not exaggerating. The neck on this guitar (maple board) feels as if it was carved by Angels.

This is my first Fender guitar. Was always a Les Paul lover, but now I've strayed. Have a DRRI, Bj NOS and Pj, and am thrilled with them as well. Extremely.

I've a handful of other pretty descent guitars ( '07 Gibson Les Paul Studio, '05 Gretsch 6122-62 Country Classic, '06 Gretsch 6196 Country Club, '02 Rickenbacker 360, '98 Taylor 310), and I can tell you that nothing I own is made finer then the Strat I ended up with. And the Stratocaster is the nicest feeling and playing of them all. The neck pickup clean with lot's of volume is....wonderful.

Earlier someone mentioned they feel all the Squires they've played are much better than the Fenders. Good for you, you can buy 'em, but that makes absolutely no sense to me.

I bought a 2006 Electron Blue Fender Stratocaster off Craigslist a couple of months ago and the Fret edges were so sharp they would cut your hand, I only paid $139.00 for the guitar, but after doing a little research I learned about weather conditions and dryness and humidity, luckily I have a built in humidifier in my house so I turned it up to 45% and now the guitar doesn’t have any sharp fret edges so all it took was getting some moisture into the neck and its fine now, I think the consensus is correct that weather and dryness cause the majority of the sharp fret edges get a good humidifier and get some moisture in that guitar, Thanks

Rosewood (not coated maple) fretboards on our guitars will dry out over time, too, and need to be re oiled. If new guitars have been sitting for a long time in storage, under poor conditions, this could possibly be an issue with them. Similar things will occur. Shrinkage of the wood and exposing fret edges and ends. Fender talks about it, as do all mfgrs, in their manuals. Typically every 3-6 months.

Any of the recommended fretboard care oils. Follow directions. Several discussions googleable too. Some contradict each other. I simply do what the mfgrs recommend. They know better than I. No pledge.

You can file off the protruding edged and not ruin the neck itself, only to the point you are now comfortable.

I agree angelripper1. Sharp fret edges are unacceptable. 2 weeks ago I bought an American Standard Strat. from bestbuy.com. When it arrived I immediately inspected the neck and it had sharp edge frets. This is unacceptable on a $1000 guitar. I took the guitar back and got a refund. Last week I re-ordered another American made Strat. and this one turned out just fine. The moral is do not settle for poorly made guitars.

you know i won a 5000 dollar gift card to bestbuy and didnt find out that they sold real, 1000 dollar guitars there until after i bought a 56 inch hd tv with the table bluray dvd player laptop and itouch and believe me i would gladly trade it all for 3 or 4 fenders
