Hi everybody. Although I joined about a year ago, I'm still kinda a "newbie" on here. I don't actually send any new posts, but I have replied to some, and I do enjoy this place. I'm learning a lot, and I definitely like seeing pics of everybody's guitars for sure. I'm gonna try and post some of mine in the near future.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you use Fender's stainless strings on your Strats, Teles, etc? Right now I use 250r on my Tele, and 150TR on my Strat. What would be the difference in sound? Brighter? Louder?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I don't think the kind of strings effect the tone as much as the thickness.

I would just try them. There are a lot of variables involved, like guitar setup amp, cords. I haven't used Fender strings since the late 70's. They just seem to go dead way too fast and break a lot the Super Bullets were the last straw for me. Some folks love them though. I mostly use D'Addario or Snake Oil brand.

There are several variables in strings that make a difference in tone.

Agreed, I just meant thickness is one of those variables that makes a big difference in tone.

I used to use the Bullets .09 then .10 they sounded good but I found they went dull fairly quickly.
I've lately been using D'Addario 10's and really like them.

I also liked the GHS nickel rockers but no one seems to carries them here anymore :(

I did spot the "GHS David Gilmour Signature Blue Set Electric Guitar Strings" might give them a try someday when I am feeling adventurous.

I haven't used stainless steel strings in years, but would try them every now and them. If anything, I remember them sounding just slightly brighter to me. But they'd be a different brands, so it wasn't like I was comparing Fender nickel to Fender stainless.

I wouldn't look at strings to change tone much though. You look at strings for how they feel to you and how long they last for your playing style.

I used stainless strings ages ago on my ibanez. i remember them being brighter, but dying out quicker. I also remember that I absolutely hated they way they felt.

I've said this before, be careful with heavy strings unless you have strong hands. Unless you're using 8's, the difference in tone isn't worth what you
will eventually do to your hands. I used to use 12 or 13's depending on what guitar I was using. The long scale length of a Strat combined with heavy strings can give you all kinds of problems with your hands, even tuning down a half step. I've worked with a lot of guys that including myself that it has happened to. I'm 53 now been playing for 42 years and smartened up when I was around 30. I use 10's now. You can make your own sets of light top heavy bottom or just buy them already made up. It'll really fatten up your tone.

String construction as well as the quality of materials to make the string can effect the tone. Not all Nickle, Brass and Bronze or steel is created equal. It should be, but it's not. That's why some strings last long and retain their tone while others don't.
YMMV

Thanks for the input everyone. I guess I'm not really looking to change the type or gauge of strings, just wondering if anyone uses/used them. Right now I use Fender 150TR on my Strat- .010 .013 .015 .026 .032 .038- and really do like the feel and sound of them. I had it set up professionally for that gauge, too.
Tele has .010 .013 .017 .026 .036 .046 (250R)
I have tried D'Addarios but wasn't crazy about them. The Fender strings just sound more "Fendery" to me.
I am also 52, and have been playing for more than 30 years, but these are my first real Fenders. I did have a Univox Strat years ago that I wish I still had.
Anyway, this Forum is a great place!

One thing I have seen with Stainless steel strings is that they tend to wear down your frets faster than nickel or any other softer metal. Stainless strings do tend to last longer and seem a bit brighter, but I don't know if the cost of refretting an instrument is worth the extra service time on the strings.

Just my opinion

so stainless will wear your frets down quicker??!!
Nikel wont.

i am looking at a set of daddario i had close by, and they are "nickel wound". does this mean the heavier strings have nickel wound around a steel core? does this mean the high strings are still stainless steel and could wear the frets quicker than the bass strings, so eventually you will end up with frets that are wore to crap under the high e and b, but fine under the low e?

Schmintan,
The short answer to your question is yes... The wound strings do not wear the frets as fast as the unwound strings... Alot depends on your style of play and the type of steel used in the unwound string. Some are softer than others, and some of it depends on the type of and the diameter of the frets. Don't worry though it still takes thousands of hours to wear one down and they can always be dressed and crowned to get more life out of them.

I have used them on my Les Pauls and still do. They sound so great. Now I thinking about trying them on my Strat to see what kind of tone I will get. I not so worried to much fret wear. I don't wear my frets out so much like Eddie does. :D
