My wife (girlfriend back then)and myself saw Lonnie Mack and SRV at the Fox in Atlanta New Year's Eve 1986. What a show!!! My girl liked Stevie but not enough to sit through a show but to me WOW! SRV put on one of the best shows I've EVER been to. When I got a new boss back in April 1993 we were discussing Stevie and I happened to mention where and when I had seen him and my boss bowed at my feet and said I'm not worthy(because he pretty much worshipped SRV and never got the opportunity to see him).

If you look at Clapton, it can increase your respect for SRV. Clapton went back to the true blues and was one of the first to do it. He was heavily influenced by BB King you can see that from his licks and from BB's "brother" Albert and Muddy Waters, and he created a new sound nobody was doing - the overdrive, the fat tone, Marshalls cranked, some dissonance. It was a harder tone and different. BB plays a real smooth, clean blue blues close cousin to jazz tone and style with that sweet blues piano and horns backing him. Eric took it and made it harder and angrier, because he was just plain pissed off wasn't he? Eric was copied so universally that now his sound is everywhere, and especially was in the 1970s, people don't even know it's Eric. SRV like Santana and Allman didn't just copy Eric. SRV took it in his own direction back to a 1950s rock and roll rockin' fast blues style but on an F15. SRV's different, great and very worth a lot of respect imho, and Clapton recognized him and toured with him and respected him. That says a lot.

Stevie also inspired Clapton to do his now Infamous Unplugged appearance.

OK, here, goes:

Stevie Ray Vaughan died before I was born. My Dad came downstairs one night, looked at me and said, "You're watching Stevie Ray Vaughan tonight." I look quite confused, not knowing who he was.

This next Monday will be seventeen years since he died. My Dad was upset beyond words when it happened. He didn't even think about having his guitar lesson that night... yeah, he was that upset.

Anyway, my point is that Stevie made a big impact on my life and my Dad's life. I think that Stevie Ray was the best guitar player to ever live. His music means a lot to me. But nobody remembers him!

So, remember Stevie Ray, and if you have anything to say, as well, please say it. Thanks so much.

I'm Stoni from Hungary. Here are many fans of SRV. My favorit too. Don't forget remember, He's a classical blues guitarist in the Hall of Fame!

He has brought huge amounts of amazing music to this world, and inspiration to many including me.

I would say that SRV is a household word today. Everyone I know knows who he was.

I've heard stories about how impossible it was to play SRVs' guitar. Apparently he used the largest gauge available and had the strings set extremely high.

Most players who tried, couldn't even get a chord out of it!

Hey blues_boy,

I already posted my experience about SRV earlier today in the poll B.B. King vs. SRV so I won't go into it here again but check out that thread... you might like my story of the day I met Stevie Ray Vaughan.

SRV is not the greatest guitarist ever Phil Keaggy is.
[Enough said about that.]
SRV was truly a great guitarist. Not very many can do what this great guitarist did. What impressed me so much was his perseverance and his will to survive.

{Eye Of The Tiger Lyrics Expresses this guitarist.}

SRV was a master. I remember watching his performances on TV before he died just being amazed at his playing and style.

A unique style, very gifted and entitled to his own niche, to be recognized on his own merits without comparison to other artists.

What he left behind is not only a creative body of work, but the challenge to other players to refine and improve technique to be able to play the way he did.

That is his legacy as will be the legacy of other who inspire us.
