I found just one problem with your list doc. Why the hell is vince gill listed? He hasn't done anything miraculous, especially when it comes to guitar playing. He's an alright player, but there's nothing special about it. He sure doesn't belong in that list.

I tell ya what, let's take Vince off of it and put Ry Cooder in instead. Or better yet, to replace country with country, replace him with Junior Brown. That way it'll keep the list strong.

I see Vince as quite an accomplished, multi-talented vocalist/instrumentalist, but I could go with your substitutes. Of course.......you've left out Brad Paisley!!!

Paisley??? Hell, Vince Gill comes closer to the list than him.

If the list is destined to suck, might as well add Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and all those pricks.

(As you can tell, I hate new country)

Let's get this thread back on track. Stevie Ray Vaughan lifted the blues out of the mess of '80s synthasizers when the Blues had been left for Dead by the record companies. He re-energized the careers of Albert Collins, Buddy Guy, Lonnie Mack and many others. Most of the other guitar players mentioned in this thread are great players, but all came in at a time when thier music was popular (except Hendrix).

SRV Inspired and even Scared his compatriots. Eric Clapton's quote from A Tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan, "If I'd allowed myself to be taken in entirely by what he was doing, I'd of had to clear out. I'd have Done a runner"

Buddy Guy changed his style of playing after hearing Stevie.

Not to mention what SRV did for old records. Suddenly 15 year old kids were looking to find out who Albet King was. Who's Lonnie MAck, Who's T-Bone Walker, Who's Blind Willie McTell, who's Lighning Hopkins.

This is only a little of what he did for music, both what the audience hears and what happens in the industry.

This is exactly my situation. I had no idea who some of these guys were until I heard of Stevie Ray, and now I've got a completely different outlook on music.

Really great post, FirstMeasure. Nailed the issue on the head.

If you, the reader, still harbor any doubts, I invite you to check out "SRV Live at the Mocambo." This DVD just made Guitar Player's top guitar DVD's ever made. Voodoo Chile (Slight Return), Texas Flood playing behind his back, behind his head, and with his left hand over the top of the fretboard. 'Plays Lenny (both the guitar and the song) while sitting and smoking a cigarette, while sweat drips off his nose. And in the middle of watching him play, when you catch yourself with your lower jaw dropping in awe of what you're seeing. ... Then you'll know.

Any guitar player that has had his heart broken and his soul has spilled forth has had his moment of brilliance on the fretboard. The great ones are just able to recreate that on demand.

NO DISRESPECT INTENDED!

SRV`s version of Voodoo Child is insane. He played it better than Hendrix in my opinion. His skills are hard to match and the sound he got from his guitar was unique. 8/27/90 was a sad day for anyone who knew and listened to his music.

+1 on that. His cover of little wing is beautiful also.

SRV was a great rhythm guitar player. Arguably one of the best ever in the rock/blues genre. That's what really blew me away about his playing...not his leads....but his rhythm...
