He was one of the finest "three fingered" lead players out there. Johnny Winter was another. Can't imagine what their capabilities could have been if they'd learned how to incorporate the use of their little finger in their lead work.

SRV was the guy who inspired me to pick up a guitar again after a very long layoff. Favorite song? If I can only name one, it's "Texas Flood". I still shake my head in amazement at "Rude Mood".

I know. Clapton once said that when they played the last bill of Stevie's life together, he saw what he called "the purest channel that I had ever seen. It was like everything he played flowed straight down from heaven." I have been watching the Montreux shows a lot recently, and when I see him play Rude Mood, I understand what he means. When it first hit me, I felt like someone had knocked the air out of me.

Stevie Ray Vaughn was an ordinary man who did extrodinary things with his Strat. I remember reading an article in Rolling Stone about him at the beginning of his rise. I would say that his style has influenced me, but I am careful not to intrude on what he put his signature on. we are all influenced by the players we admire, however it is important to develope your own unique style. Thats what made Stevie unique. Nobody was doing what he was doing at that time. He was a truly gifted artist, and went through Hell to become a true human being. My favorite SRV melody is, Riviera Paradise, because it takes me back to a time when I was younger and times were better. God bless you Lenny, Jimmy, and all of SRVs loved ones. He will live on in my Strat.

On the "Texas Flood" CD, there's a track called "Stevie Speaks" or something like that where he talks about his playing. He says the music just flows out of him and if he had to play 'correctly' and think about what he was doing like whether or not he had the right fingers on the right strings, he just couldn't play.

Stevie was amazing and i cant get enough of his music, it's timeless. I never had the chance to see him live but i have all his videos and audio. I have seen a tribute band "Crossfire" here in Los Angeles and Alan Iglesias plays a wonderful tribute to Stevie, this guy is really amazing. Stevie's tone was incredible, his playing ability and style are unique and powerful. There will never be another SRV.....

guy's Stevie had some excellent songs don't get me wrong but there are two or three where he is just soulful and phenominal. Ain't gunna give up on love, Leave my little girl alone live version, and Life Without You. All of those just melt your soul whether it's lyrical genius or just powerful playing.

i will always remember him and think about him. but his soul is still around flying through the air like a kite!! growing up he was my second musical find next to micheal jackson-heehee shaawmouwnn! and he reminded me of raiden from mortal kombat when i was a kid. im sure he is the reason i play guitar and probably the reason i stuck with music and didnt give it up. i guess he was my first hero.=)

He's one of my top two players ever (Clapton). I have 2 basic thoughts on Stevie Ray:

1. To this day, when one of his songs comes on the radio, it kicks serious arse. If the mark of great art is it's ability to hold up over time (in this case 20ish years), SRV was clearly a master.

2. Stevie's cover of Little Wing is, to me, the greatest guitar-based instrumental ever, and it defines what a tube amp should sound like. Listening to the warm, snappy, and glassy tone oozes emotion.

I love RP too (heh heh, who doesn't?). Interesting tid-bit about that track. It's almost 9 minutes long. It was a nine year "project" song. Can you imagine how many times they must've rehearsed it, growing it for NINE YEARS before recording this release.

The best part about it is the day it was recorded, SRV was the only person in the band who was aware it was even being recorded, & so you are listening to a totally uncut, unaltered, pure 9 minutes of perfection all done in ONE TAKE - extreme rarity in this business, for studio work.

Wow, that is possibly one of the best Stevie stories I have ever read. And the nine year project? That's how long Tommy Shannon played bass for Double Trouble. 8)
