Hi!

I have a problem, or at least I think I do, and need some help.

I bought a used Sambora Strat the other day and when I have the pup switch in pos 1 (humbucker) the humbucker sounds very thin and is a bit noisy/buzzy, like its wired wrong or not grounded.

Second, in pos 2 (hum & mid), I get a heck of a buzz. Not like in pos 4, 2 singles.

I thought that in pos 2, it would be hum canceling because it should only be the mid pup and the humbucker was split, per Fenders wiring PDF.

Also, does anyone know if the humbucker green wire is wired to the switch and red to the volume pot or the other way around. (unclear in PDF).

Is it possible that the switch itself is cooked giving me the buzzing in pos 1 & 2? Everything is wired correct. (other than red and green, but I switched them with the same result)

Thanks! :?

This sounds similar to a problem i had years and yonks ago. If you have a dimarzio bucker installed the red and green wires need to join together.

heres the wiring diagram
http://www.fender.com/support/diagrams/pdfs/SAMBORASTDSTRAT/SD1132700APg2.pdf It shows a dimarzio pickup. It the pickup has been changed then you need to go to the manufacturer and source which wires to join to keep the pickup in phase.
That diagram matches these switching options.

this wiring diagram

Gives these switching options.

Extra info...

I have the same instrument. Nikininja is spot on with the variable wiring. That bucker is the custom wound DiMarzio H8. That Wide Oval C neck is my favorite.

Thanks.
Actually, this is exactly how it is wired and I get that sucked out sound from the PAF PRO and buzz/hum from the pos 2 / humbucker and mid single coil.

is it a hollow sound on the paf. if so then the paf could be out of phase.
Is the middle sc reverse wound reverse polarity if so that can cause troubles too. Try swapping the mid and neck pickup positions on the switch and scratchplate.
It could it be a problem with the bottom tone pot as thats the only thing they share that doesnt involve the neck pickup?

I'm no wiring expert just trying to be pragmatic.

Hey.

I found the problem.

Whoever wired it before melted the rubber off the ground wire from the PAF PRO, so I fixed it up and sounds good now.

Thanks for your help!
