Hi All

I have a thirteen-year-old strat which is in excellent condition but has shallow swirl marks in the paint work which have acumulated over time. I would be very grateful if anyone could provide any advice or suggestions regarding how best to remove them.

Many thanks.

Automotive swirl removers work really well when used with a high speed buffer- just be careful not to go through the paint.

That's the one...

Hi Cicero, welcome to the Forum. I'm curious about a gentleman who uses the alias Cicero. Are you a lawyer? Or a fan of Latin literature? Or a history buff? Or just a reader of Robert Harris?

Or perhaps it's not an alias?

Ave - C

...Oh heck. My fault for asking, I suppose.

Bearing in mind that it is a very, very long time since I did any of this, and even then I was very, very bad at it - what about...:

Opus est multae arvinae cubiti (mea latinitas est varietatis callariatis).

Full of mistakes, no doubt. Feel free not to respond in Latin. My head ain't up to it...

Cheers - C

Me neither!

I was delighted to give up high school Latin at the first possible opportunity. Luckily a non-live Forum allows us to be a bit sneaky: I rang a friend who's much better at languages than me for help on what I wrote. Even he was unsure of much of it: both of us were scratching our heads over what the Romans actually called their own language. Perhaps Mr Cicero can tell us which declension latinitas is?

What I wrote is probably codswallop, but hopefully there's no Ancient Romans here to say so...

Incidentally, on the subject of going gently on the polishing of a guitar finish I see that Ovid had some good advice:

Gutta cavat lapidem, non vi sed saepe cadendo.

I do hope that's an end to the matter! Shall we talk about guitars instead - in English?

CENTURION:
What's this, then? 'Romanes Eunt Domus'? 'People called Romanes they go the house'?
BRIAN:
It-- it says, 'Romans, go home'.
CENTURION:
No, it doesn't. What's Latin for 'Roman'? Come on!
BRIAN:
Aah!
CENTURION:
Come on!
BRIAN:
'R-- Romanus'?

Conjugate the verb 'to go'.
BRIAN:
Uh. 'Ire'. Uh, 'eo'. 'Is'. 'It'. 'Imus'. 'Itis'. 'Eunt'.
CENTURION:
So 'eunt' is...?
BRIAN:
Ah, huh, third person plural, uh, present indicative. Uh, 'they go'.
CENTURION:
But 'Romans, go home' is an order, so you must use the...?
BRIAN:
The... imperative!
CENTURION:
Which is...?
BRIAN:
Umm! Oh. Oh. Um, 'i'. 'I'!
CENTURION:
How many Romans?
BRIAN:
Ah! 'I'-- Plural. Plural. 'Ite'. 'Ite'.

'Go home'? This is motion towards. Isn't it, boy?

Yes, sir.
CENTURION:
Now, write it out a hundred times.
BRIAN:
Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar, sir.
CENTURION:
Hail Caesar. If it's not done by sunrise, I'll cut your balls off.
BRIAN:
Oh, thank you, sir. Thank you, sir. Hail Caesar and everything, sir! Oh. Mmm!

Ceri.......I've been gone from the forum for a while. I remember you were having a bit of a medical problem..........how are you doing. I'd like an update. You had me worried for a bit. You're a great asset here.

Hey Twelvebar: I think that's in my top five favorite films ever. When I rang my friend for help with my Latin we started talking about that very scene - and then we both went off and watched it, rang each other back and fell about laughing quoting lines from it.

Thank you for the transcript! I believe some of the most miserable hours of my life were spent dazed and confused in the high school Latin class...

Syeklops: thanks so much for your friendly enquiry. Just saw the docs again earlier this week as it happens. So far, all's fine and being monitored.

Nice to see you around, too, by the way. Hope your throne's still treating you well...

And Cicero: no good regretting it now! As you yourself said in a former existance:

Epistula non erubescit.

Cheers - C
