I'm talking about the non-custom shop American model. I haven't had the opportunity to play one yet, but I was wondering what the neck feels like. I prefer a natural wood feel over a glossy feel, and since the neck is tinted wouldn't that mean that it would have a sticky, glossy feel to it? I was also wondering how the shape of it feels. Of course, I know I ought to just go play one to find out how I personally would like or dislike it but I won't have the chance to go to guitar center for awhile but I'm curious and I have no patience.

The neck is a very large C shape. It definitely takes a bit to get used to. The finish on the neck looks like that on an older nitro finished guitar but is not sticky and feels great because it is urethane.

I just looked at that guitar the other day for the same reason you asked, the neck and how it feels. Compared to my `08 Strat, the neck didn`t feel like there was that big a difference. The SRV did not have a glossy finish on the neck and if I`m not mistaken its made from pao ferro, not rosewood. But double check that...Thats my next axe

The neck is thicker and narrower than the 08 strat which has a modern c neck.I have fairly small handsand have no problems with the neck at all.The neck isntsticky at all either.A few of the main differences of the SRV strat are it has 6105 Dunlop frets, which are tall and narrower than normal frets. It takes some getting used to .You will notice some difference when you slide from one fret to the next. They are great for bends.Another nocitable difference is the 12 inch radius fretboard. It is a really flat fretboard and some people like it some dont. The pao ferro has a feel somewhere between maple and rosewood.I have had mine for over 2 years and i am still amazed at how well it plays and sounds. The craftmanship is a notch better than the normal Americans.Another thing worth mentioning is it has a lefty tremolo ,it took me some getting used to it, but i like it.

Stevie said he used those frets because of the sustain it gave him. Funny, I never made any association between frets and sustain until I read that.

Interesting. My Squier has a 12 inch radius neck that I really like. Are there any other Fenders with a 12 inch radius?

I guess the 6105 frets could handle .12's? That's the problem with all my guitars, they have little tiny frets so the thickest strings I can put on most of them are .10's or .11's.

Now I'm really excited about playing one. Next time I go to guitar center if they don't have one in stock I'm going to be very, very disappointed. Of course maybe that's for the best, since I can't afford one right now anyway. Maybe after my summer jobs...

With the new price increase the SRV is around $1800 now, and thats before you add the tax.

Of the Fender guitars, the ones that i know of that have a 12 inch radius are the Deluxe Player and the EJ.I do know that the price is going up soon.Right now they go for 1599.I know when i got mine Music 123 had special financing with no interest for 15 months.Thats how i got mine. What you could do if GC doesnt have one is sometimes they will let you order one and if you didnt like it, you could tell them no and i dont believe you are under any obligation to buy.Its a shame they dont carry these in stock to try.I am pretty sure you could even put 13s on the SRVif you wanted to.It comes set up with 10s, but with extra springs for the tremolo.

If I got one it would probably be used anyway, but I like the idea of returning it if there's a problem or I want to try another one. I don't know, I'm still looking into what kind of American Strat I'd like. So far I like either the SRV, the EJ or the hot rod '62.

I just got an SRV a week or so a go. Mine is a mint condition 92 model, but I guess they are probably still made the same.

I love it. I love the feel of the fatter neck etc. I don't have large hands nad I don't have any problems playing. I must say though, going back to my American Deluxe, it feels a bit skinny!!!

The Middle and Neck picks up are FAT AS... but the bridge can be a little tinny.

Cheers

I agree about the bridge pickup.I am thinking about modding it so i can control the tone of my bridge pickup, that would help.Right now i am using an eq pedal to fatten it up.

Hmm Not that I use them much, but I though the bottom tone knob did control the Bridge pickup?

Hmmm Now you have me curious... must check that when I get home.

Nope, the SRV is wired as a vintage strat would be wired,no control on the bridge.Easy fix though.

I have Texas Specials in my Squier Strat and I love them. (That's one of the reasons I'm interested in the SRV Strat, I already know I like the pups.)
I had the bridge pickup wired to the tone knob that also controls the middle pickup and it makes it sound much better when I use just the bridge pup and roll off on the tone a little. It's a mod worth making.
