Thank you, F! Much appreciated.

I'd like to see the next stage too - I had no idea it was all going to take this long. Just keep finding more that's wrong with this thing...

Onward and upward!

Cheers - C

It's going to be a vintage style trem. I nearly messed up a six-screw to two-point trem conversion once upon a time - so I hope I learnt my "positional" lessons on that one.
Fingers crossed...

Well its good to hear you've done it before and aware of it......and Ceri as in my previous post i'm hoping this bod project of yours is gonna turn out GREAT!!So yeah finger crossed brotha....

So maybe it's the "Baby Blue Strat" - does that sound like a girl's name?

How about "Beau Baby Blue"........

Oh, one other thing, Twelvebar. Regarding what you were saying on the other thread: by now Brad has had time to delete this one if Fender objected. So I'm guessing this sort of thread is OK...?

I'm hoping Brad be lenient enough with us as this thread breath new hope from the usual "Identify this start","What is my strat" topic (dont get me wrong fellow members its the fact that we hope to see a good constructive topic like this rite?) for us frequent forumites and look forward everyday for the "next instalment" as fhopkins put it....

if at the end of all this it turns out it's in the wrong place you will be able to hear a grown man weeping and wailing - from whereever in the world you are!

Is that "wailing" gonna be patented.....i might wanna use that as a sampler for my homemade wah....LOL!!!

 Oops, you catch me out in an immodest moment...

Unfortunately, a certain part of the energy of this project is driven by the desire to get my own back on the original builder and seller of this body. Not very noble, eh?

Hi belphedeus (good day!): now there you touch on a part of this that's important to me. It is vital to be clear that we're not trying to fake a Fender here. The ethos of this is to make a guitar that's like a Fender, but not a Fender.

There's going to be all sorts of things about this guitar that will indicate to anyone who knows that it is not a pirate fakocaster, merely an "in-the-style-of" job.

(All I've been doing today is prepping the timber and that doesn't really deserve photos. So instead why not take this opportunity to let you see the other parts and one or two details...)

Here's a closeup of the bridge pickup cavity:
Image

You notice where I've built up the cavity wall now creates a corner as it joins the control cavity which is distinctly un-Fender. At first I was glancing at that and thinking I needed to get round to doing something to rectify it. Then it occured to me that if I left it then it would signal to anyone with a keen eye that this body was not built by Fender. Similarly, that front edge of the trem cavity has been built up by a couple of mil which creates a lip when seen from below. Again, subtly but clearly not a Fender cavity.

This guitar is not for selling, but I want to be sure that if in a few decades time some kid posts pictures of it on a Forum like this one and asks, "is this a genuine Fender?" then expert types like we have here will be able to look at that detail and say, "don't spend your money - it ain't genuine!"

There are also going to be a couple of discreetly placed "made by Ceri" decals that will further reveal it not to be a Fakeocaster. As someone who was once conned on a fake Fender neck I'm kinda hot on that sort of thing!

Further, all the parts are chosen to be high grade but subtly not mistakable for Fender. Here's the hardware:
Image

Top of the line Gotoh vintage tuners with adjustable height pole pieces. Far as I'm aware those have never been used on a real Fender. And that's Gotoh's top of the range vintage bridge - which you see carries no misleading Fender stamps:
Image

Far as the pups are concerned, I've gone for a Bare Knuckle set they call their "Sultans" single coils. Not hard to work out what sound those are chasing: they are spec'd as 6.4 / 5.75 /5.75 K output, AlNiCo II bevelled vintage stagger magnets, with a non-vintage RW/RP middle pickup:

http://www.bareknucklepickups.co.uk/ZS-thesultans.html

So happens, Bare Knuckle have started offering their pickups in pre-wired harnesses, and since the price works out at a few pennies less than the individual parts I opted for one of those (actually, I got it as a birthday pressie from my wife last autumn). Here it is:
Image

All plastic parts in Mint Green (spot the deliberate anomaly...). Here's the rear of the 'guard:
Image

And here's a detail of the soldering. I certainly can't do any better than this - and a nice Vitamin Q cap as well:
Image

Lastly, on the "like a Fender but not a Fender" theme: the color of this Strat is going to be similar to a nice '60s Sonic Blue. However, though that color is readily available I have instead ordered a batch of nitro in a pale blue color drawn from Ford Europe's late '50s chart. It is called Pompadour Blue: not a great name, but a very nice retro vibe, for anyone of my vintage who can remember cars on the street in colors of that sort...

In other words, the whole project is an exercise in carefully not stepping on any of Fender's patents, brandmarks and copyrights. Phew!

And that's where we're up to. I'll do some grain filling tonight and show you the body prior to beginning spraying tomorrow...

Cheers - C

Well, you've actually seen the neck before. Remember my broken tuner screw extraction?

A vintage tinted 7.5 inch radius, 21 fret, '50s V-shaped Fender Licensed neck.

In other words, this is essentially a '50s neck on a '60s body project...

Looks great so far.
y' know for me i always hate the look of the mint pickguards(scratchpplates) when I see em off by themselves, yet they always look so good mounted on the guitar.

oh and that 50's ford blue is a good choice. Fender probably used it as their sonic blue at one point back then. Leo would buy up huge lots of automotive paint, not always from the same suppliers, and use it til it was gone. They had a bunch of different hues that were sold as sonic blue over the years. There was no computer colour matching, so sometimes different batch lots from the same company were fairly different too.

Fellas, throughout this thing I've been knocked out by the nice things people have been saying. Deeply charmed.

A few minutes ago my wife came in and decided NOW was the moment she was going to find out what this whole Forum thing is all about. And she has just read this (very wordy) thread from end to end. Gosh.

So now I'm even more grateful for your kind remarks - my wife feels I'm mixing with very nice folks!

Which I am!

Thank you - C
