In line with Lite'nin's reference to a' little taste'..you realize that the proper English way would be to polish that off with a pint in the same fashion we spoke of a couple of days ago......and I'll leave out the double entendres.

Hey Ed: you're obviously living in a different universe than me - since when did 18 year olds not want to tan the hides of forty-somethings?

Let's get together for a drink sometime and talk about it. Which part of town are you based in?

***

Anyhow. Just so's y'all don't think I've forgotten about this thing, and to maintain the pretence that this is still a serious building thread, here's a couple of pics of polishing (yes, that bod has now had all the drying time it's gonna get!):
Image

In my glamorous custom shop the kitchen worktop doubles as buffing station. Above we're working our way up the grades of wet-and-dry paper, starting at P1000, then P1500 and finally P2000. Used soaking wet with a little dishwashing detergent in the water for lubrication. Note, I wonder if any keen eyed folk know what that bottle to the right of the gin is...?

Back in the distant mists of this thread Mr shane0685 talked about his very fine abrasives:

The polishing cloths I use are: 1800, 2400, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000 grit. Use them in order and you get a glass-finish before you even use any kind of wax or protectant. ~ Shane

That got me curious so I sent off for a set of Micro Mesh pads, which is what I presume he's talking about:
Image

That's probably the self same set that Shane has, running up the grades to 12000 grit. So I did a little experiment and buffed the front of the body with the Micro Mesh pads, working methodically through the grades, and did the back of the body by my usual method of polishing with automotive cutting cream.

Frankly, I think it made no noticeable difference, except that the Micro Mesh took longer. In fact, I still wanted to give the front of the body a quick rub over with polish after just to bring it to a top gloss. I can see that the Micro Mesh will be very handy for spot repairs; for buffing a guitar body it ain't really practical - IMHO.

Now gents. Not trying to mess with you, but I have in fact slapped this guitar together. It looks great!

I've done some nice photos, but there's a couple more shots I'd like to get, and I want to put them in front of you all at one go. So you're just going to have to wait another day or two: like David Lean I'm waiting patiently for just the right light...

Nearly, nearly there... - C

plenty of Plymouth Gin helps the process no end.

Ceri,

Won't the Plymouth gin eat through the finish?

So you don't use it in a Martini recipe!

Speaking of which, have you tried the James Bond Martini?

Not bad!

Nah - like so much else Ian Fleming got martinis wrong. Supposing the macho idea is to make the drink as strong as possible shaken not stirred is self defeating. You'd break up the ice and dilute the drink.

(I liked what Daniel Craig replied to: "shaken or stirred, Mr Bond?" "Do I look like I care?")

Plymouth gin, twist of lime peel and a drop of Noilly Prat: that's the guitar finisher's martini...

Hiccup - C

PS dkals: I find the gin just loosens the nitro nicely ready for sanding...

......a clever way of telling a new audience:

"This isn't your father's James Bond" 8)

Interesting family tree, that. I find Craig's interpretation to be more of Fleming's 'Bond" than any of the actors who played him heretofore.

I actually totally agree. His first movie, casino Royalle was the most true to the novel, although updated for the times.

My observation was based, in part, on comments Craig made about how he decided he was going to approach this character when he was first cast for the part. James Bond is definitely not a 'Mr. Nice Guy". Anyone having read Fleming would understand.

Martinis, Bond, Fleming? Talk about "vamping till ready"!!

Oh, OK. Shall we have some pics?

Here's the finished body, buffed and ready for action:

So. Let's bolt it together:

Now we're ready for some guitar porn:

And finally. I thought we needed a location with a vague nod in the direction of the period the Blue Strat emulates. Here's the new guitar and its relieved builder at Ed's Easy Diner:

FINISHED!!!

Thanks hamms30. The sound is easy to describe. Those are a Bare Knuckles Pickups set they call their Sultans Single Coils. From the name it ain't too hard to work out the tone they're after - and they nailed it!

Give the first Dire Straights album a spin - that's the noise this thing puts out.

Cheers - C
