But, hey! I forgot to give the results of the lacquer weight test. If you recall, Nikininja sanded 197 grams / 6.95 ounces of polyester lacquer off a MIM body. My figures were...

Prepped body before finishing: 1678 g / 3 lb 10 7/8 oz.

After priming: 1700 g / 3 lb 11 3/4 oz.

Finished body: 1730 g / 3 lb 12 3/4 oz.

So the lacquer weighs 52 grams / 1 7/8 oz. Of which the primer is 22 grams / 7/8 ounce: a little under half the total.

Image

So my nitro effort is roughly a quarter the amount of finish of Fender's polyester. I actually set very little store by that, but no doubt it'll be useful ammunition for the "thin-skin" devotees...!

I also tried measuring the thickness with my digital calipers. After the sums the finish is supposedly 0.47 mm / 0.004 inch thick. However, that should be taken with a huge pinch of salt. The caliper reading fluctuates depending how hard I press on the little thumb wheel on the instrument and I have no confidence that I'm comparing like with like.

Let's follow the Ninja and believe in the weight figure. The modern way to think about guitar finishes!

Cheers - C

Thanks I might try to do one next time and show everybody else the steps that I did to make the strat or if they have already seen how it looks like.

Ceri,

That is really amazing how far you've come with that guitar body since you started this thread, and I was reading from the beginning about what you got, and what you've done about it.

You're quite a talented craftsman! The Sonic Blue, is a cool color. If I had'nt gotten my 60' Custom Strat in Surf Green, I would have chosen Daphne Blue, which is pretty close to the Sonic Blue, just slightly darker I think.

Great job!

Follow the ninja
reminds me of the old hofmeister beer adverts.

I'm off to dig some kitchen weights out now and see exactly what 197g feels like.

Point of interest maybe. Unable to find old style weights in my kitchen, the missus is far too efficient for them. I decided to weigh a few things i had lying around. My cheapo kodak camera weighs 195g. Its not that light is it. Now if you find something similar i urge you to find something weighing around 50g. Shocking difference to hand eh

[quote="alwaysstrat"][quote="Ceri"][Panting] OK, after some busy days I'm finished painting (hey, who needs to earn a living anyhow?).

People have been surprisingly involved in the fact that I've been doing my finishing flat. Half way through this week's work I suddenly became irritated with the little block of cushioned wood I've been balancing the body on while spraying, and I ran myself up a slightly better tool for the job:
Image

Not exactly high-tech, but at least now I can reach in underneath to rotate it as I work, rather than trying to move it round by fingertipping the underside of the body. I doubt you'll be seeing that stand available for purchase from Luthiers' Mercantile any time soon, however!

Right. I'm afraid Orvilleowner has got wind that there now follows a hiatus while I leave my lacquer to harden for a bare minimum of three weeks. I suspect Mr Twelvebar would prefer that to be a full month - and I tend to agree with him. Let's see how long I can hold out...

See y'all in a few weeks for the finished instrument and the guitar porn photos!

this may sound odd...but you can get a cake decorating stand made of plastic, glass or metal depending on how much you want to spend. some plug in and some are battery powered but it would fit on top of that wooden stand perfectly and it would rotate slowly on its own to make it easier to spray. grab one of those and put a felt pad on it...and high tech rotating paint stand

Thanks Chris! Judging the amount of lacquer by weight is a neat idea, because I don't really trust the measurement I'm getting with digital calipers. I like it so much I may continue weighing bodies before and after - though we shouldn't let it influence how much lacquer we need to put on to get a good finish.

But I must be clear, the weight thing is not my idea. Forum user Nikininja came up with that one last year in a thread he ran called "refinish chronicles": the credit belongs to him. A classic moment on the Forum...

And talking of The Ninja: Niki, I never thought of a cake stand, let along a motorised one. That's a nifty idea - but I'd want it hooked to a footswitch so's I could drive it exactly as required while spraying. That would be quite cool!

At this moment that stand (above) is sitting on our table and has already become covered in the various TV remotes. Not sure my wife is delighted with this addition to our furniture...

Cheers - c

The motorized stand is Jack47804's idea not mine.

I think theres a old sewing machine in the loft though. Butchering that could be the way forward for a motorized spin control.

Could a motorized stand be employed as a drying aid?

D'uh! So it is - sorry, Jack! We need some more avatars, don't we?

A spin dryer - for guitars! I want one...

BTW: to Harley - yes, I like Daphne too. The Sonic Blue is because the original idea for this Strat (before all the problems surfaced) was for a '50s spec neck on a '60s spec body, more or less. So the '60s color was a requirement. Silly, I know...

And to musiluna and ZZDoc - thank you!

Here's the bod with two coats of blue nitro lacquer:
ImageImage

And here it is a couple of days later with the clearcoats on top:
ImageImage

I agonised about how much clear nitro to spray on: thinness versus the need to be able to buff it to a high gloss without breaking through into the color coat below. I finally sprayed five clear coats - but there's still time if anyone thinks that's too little!

Here's a couple of details of the color coat, before the clear lacquer went on. Remember the problems with the neck pocket on the first page of this thread? Here's the finished pocket:
Image

And here's the rebuilt trem cavity:
Image

You can just see the little lip created by rebuilding the neck side of the block cavity on the front of the body. I wondered whether to rebuild that all the way down the depth of the body but decided to just extend the rear overhang all the way round as another little clue to anyone in the future that it ain't a legit Fender body. Don't want to assist any sucker sales in decades to come!

Incidentally, like everyone else who posts pics of their guitars on this Forum I feel the need to emphasise that these photos don't at all represent the real color of this paint job. I've tried tinkering around with the color cast in Photoshop to make them look more like the real thing - without much success. You just have to take my word that this blue is in fact just about identical to Fender's Sonic Blue (in one of it's incarnations, anyhow).

The difference between the pre- and post-clearcoat pics is misleading too. But on that, I took the opportunity to finish a scrap piece of wood with exactly the same process as the guitar, 'cept that I clearcoated half of it and left the other half just the blue paint. Naked blue lacquer on the right:
ImageImage

In the second picture I've covered half that color test crosswise with a piece of card. I shall now leave it on a windowsill for as many years as I can be bothered to study the effect of daylight on the paint with and without the clearcoat. That's in relation to the discussions we've had on this Forum of the idea that in the '60s Fender clearcoated some of their bodies and not others. Let's see how that works out on this test sample. I'll post on it as the years pass!

Here's the bod in a corner of the spare room hanging to dry on my glamorous Dan Erlewine designed Stew-Mac guitar drying stand, imported at vast expense. Well, no...:

Nice shade of blue that's easy on the eyes, but dazzles at the same time. I'm sure that it looks even better than what the pics show. It looks almost like a daphne blue with a touch of surf turquoise.

Great job, Ceri :!:

Ah, it's probably time that was explained, for those as are wondering...

Some months ago there was an "incident" when a gentleman posted a lot of photos purporting to be his remarkable guitar collection. Eventually detective work by very clever Forum users revealed the true source of those photos. They didn't belong to the poster at all: he'd been imaginative to say the least about his guitar ownership.

People made humorous suggestions that in future we'd need to post pictures of our guitars with that day's newspaper to verify them as genuine - like in a kidnap ransom.

Orvilleowner immediately posted a picture of one of his very desirable vintage Strats with a piece of paper under the strings upon which was written "hello Ceri".

So I've been waiting patiently for an appropriate occasion to return the compliment. I don't suppose anyone actually doubts this "trash" body is mine, so it seemed like the right moment...

***

BTW: Doc, I think we're already enjoying a fair degree of tollerance from Fender over threads like this. I'm not sure we want to be shoving my miniature efforts in the Custom Shop's face - but thank you for the compliment!

And thank you too, Mike. You are not wrong about the color... :)

Cheers - C
