Similar to refinishing a car body, do you [can you, will you] wet sand the body to get the ultra-smooth finish? I've got the polishing kits that have 36000 grit polishing sandpapers that leave an amazing finish.

BTW, the body is amazing so far.

Shane~

Hi Shane: did you type an extra 0 by mistake or is that really 36,000 grit polishing paper? Even if it's only 3600 grit that is still finer than I have, so very interesting.

I haven't broken the news to Orvilleowner yet, but when the last clear coat is sprayed I will then be leaving the body hanging to dry for at least three weeks, preferably longer. Then, as you say, I shall be wet sanding with soaked wet-and-dry, probably going 1000 grit, 1500, 2000 - or there abouts. Then, not possessing glamorous buffing equipment, I move on to automotive cutting compound and finally household silver polish (a little twist of my own), all rubbed laboriously by hand. And no doubt some Dunlop 65 to top it out.

Come back in a month or so and we'll see if I pull it off!

Cheers - C

Ceri, I am curious why you didn't go for a swimming pool route? Otherwise, exceptional work man!

Actually, I've already planned a photo of the body drying, especially for Orville! Wait and see...

Hehe - rfrakes331k, if you want to see a bunch of guys turn into angry werewolves like a scene out of American Werewolf just mention swimming pool routes on the Fender Forum!

However, the more serious answer to your question is in two parts. The less noble is that I want to regain my self-respect after being sold this pig-in-a-poke by a little rip-off merchant by putting right his feeble work. The better reason is the learning process involved in seeing if I am up to the task of all that fiddly rebuilding and shaping. I kinda feel by now that at least regarding solid bodies there is not much that can't at any rate be attempted, regarding repairs or modifications.

Sort of an exercise in "what can we pull off?".

Come to think of it, maybe there's a third part too. I'm often found dishing out advice on finishing, modding, repairing and such on this Forum. Perhaps it was time to show that I'm not all "mouth and no trousers", as we say in my part of the world...

Thank you for your nice comment.

Cheers - C

I'll be very happy seeing pictures of the drying body.

It'll look pretty much as it's going to look, right?

I can wait a month for final assembly!

I promise I can.

Thanks!

Hahaha!

BTW, I heard that Mystic Meg had a cat that lived to the age of 27. Not bad for a feline. One of our cats very nearly got turned into a Davey Crocket hat at the age three yesterday, when I found I had a tabby cat hair in my clearcoat which had melted into the color layer. Several hours of very tiresome corrective work. Should that be added to the cost of lacquer we were discussing elsewhere?

You think cats are bad, try having a samoyed sniffing round your work.

Our cats always too busy with rodent murder to worry about guitar finish's.

Ah, rodent murder I know all about. The only reason I haven't found half a mouse in my clearcoat is that the final lacquering is being done at a location quarter of a mile up the road. Didn't prevent that hair getting into the varnish though...

Yeah it drops off your clothes. Doesnt matter how meticulous you are some always seems to carry. It may be a idea to get down B&Q get some £5 paper overalls and keep em where you spray. I dont bother but i'm not the perfectionist i think you may be.

Yep, I've used those paper overalls for decorating in the past. I always seem to tear out of 'em, though!

However, it's not a bad idea. I wear rubber gloves throughout the process and wipe the body carefully with a cloth to remove dust - but I wonder if that is causing static which is actually attracting hairs and such. That cat hair was by far the worst - but not the only unwanted foreign partical.

I guess at the Fender plant they are all dressed up like surgeons and spray in an antiseptic environment entered through an airlock. Or something...

Hey, cute dog, by the way!

Up the wooden hill to Bedfordshire for me (I sound like someone's grandmother!): night all - C

If you are afraid you are charging the body when you wipe it, you can always use a dryer sheet on it . i bought a little handheld vacuum for when I can start spraying. i am planning to give my clothes a quick once over, then use those paper coveralls.

I haven't sprayed anything in quite some time. And in that time I acquired Molly:

and I am afraid she might contaminate the project. temperature is till hovering just below the freezing mark here, I need it to warm up a bit. My homade paint/spray booth is going to be on my deck.

I've worked it out guys. We could use our pets to rag roll the finish. It could usher in a whole new era in guitar finish's.

Lets face it, were never going to beat the pet hair dilema.

Yeah, I put in an extra 0. The polishing cloths I use are: 1800, 2400, 3600, 4000, 6000, 8000 and 12000 grit. Use them in order and you get a glass-finish before you even use any kind of wax or protectant.

Shane~
