If I want to change from a set of 9/42's to 10/48's how much work is involved?

I would recommend a complete setup.

I agree with CAfeathers response. I did it to mine and I had to tighten the truss a bit. Fine tune intonation, and adjust saddle height slightly. It was not a real big deal though

+1...When I changed over to 11`s they had to do a complete set up.

Hate to be the dissenting voice here, but I would put on the tens and see if it needs it. What guitar do you have? It might be originally set up for 10s. Also you might decide that you want 11s or something.

Stop worrying and stick the new strings on, they'll probably be fine.

I don't know a lot about strings, gear yes, strings, not so much. I'm currently using 9s on my Strat. It's easier for bending (my fingers aren't very strong). For the last several months, I've been using the Ernie Ball 2222 Nickel Hybrid Slinky. Ouch! They seem to have become painful! I'm guessing it's time to change them but does anyone have a different brand I can try? I've already tried Elixir and D'Addario.

The vast majority of the time, a change in string gauge involves at the very least, a tweak in terms of resetting up the guitar to accomodate.

If the hybrids are giving you grief, why not just revert to a straight 9 gauge?

He's right. I've gone up from 9s to 11s over the last couple years. If your going to 11s then a truss rod adjustment will be needed, but probably not 9 to 10. What you'll definitly need to do is adjust the claw screws for the tremolo springs. You'll notice as soon as you change over your action will be much higher due to the extra tension, just pull the cover off the back and tighten the screws on the plate the springs go to untill the bridge goes back to the position it was at before. You may need to adjust the intonation also, but thatsa as easy as adjusting the saddles. I do all my own setups, and its as easy as that. If you move up from 10s you will need thestring slots in the nut widened and like I said before the truss rod adjusted.

I tried the 10's guys, in fact they were the David Gilmour GHS strings but it put everything well out. So I am gonna revert back to 9's. I will eventually learn how to set my guitar up myself but at the moment I don't trust myself.

The only reason I wanted to change was the fact my fingers were slipping when bending. I have never had that problem with Ernie Ball Super Slinkys before, it was like someone had buttered or greased them up! It was only after using the strings my new American STD came with that this problem started. Someone I spoke to said the Fender strings were not too hot so when I stuck on the Slinkys it started the problem. Not sure how true that is........

I changed from 9's to 10's on on on of my guitars. All techs I spoke to, recommended that I have a complete setup done, which I did.

You may well be able to change to 10s easy enough with no noticable problems although the action may also be altered I would take it to a tech better to be safe than sorry and at least youll know it will be at optimum playability when u get it back.
