I would like to know if anyone knows how to string the little e string at the tuning peg on a 57reissue Stratocaster. Is there a trick to it to make the string stay in the hole on the tuning peg while you are tuning the string up? :)

I actually don't clip anything off of my high e strings. Just stick the end in and wind neatly by hand. Then, when there is a little tension on it use a winder to make it nice and tight while keeping tension on the string with your free hand.

FYI..there are guys on these board that appear to be professional techs, or maybe they should be because they seem to know what they are talking about.

I assume you have standard tuning pegs. In this case, I bend the string up, at an almost 90 degree angle, so it doesnt slip back through the peg hole. But remember to leave plenty of slack in the string before doing that.

With stringing, you improve your tone and stabalize the string by winding it around the tuning peg as many times as possible without crossing the string over itself.

FYI...there are cute little gadgets, essentially little cup and handle, that covers the tuner handle and allow you to wind continuously without letting go. This provides more control when you wind.

Also, there are tuners that allow you to lock the string in place in the tuning peg before and while you wind. Many prefer Schaller Locking Tuners. The dial-knob on the back of the tuner is a screw that crimps the string so it cant slide back through the hole.

His tuners are vintage style. They are a little tricky to figure out at first but in my opinion are actually a superior tuner. You poke the tip of the string down into the string post and then crimp against a slot in the top then wind around the post. Say goodbye to pricking your fingers!

ok vintage tuners heres my method.

pull the string tight and clip it some 2" past the end of the headstock.
Turn the headstock so the tuner slot points to 2 or 3 o'clock with the guitar stood upright.
Insert the cut end of the string into the hole inside the slot. About 1" of the string should go into this hole.
Bend the string so that it comes out of the side that was pointed to 2'oclock.
Turn the key to tighten whilst keeping a finger pressed down on the string to ensure neat barrel winding as opposed to a basket weave criss cross pattern.

I use a dean markely turbo tune attatched to a drill to operate the tuner key. Heres a dunlop one, they make life a lot easier when coupled with a slow drill.

+1 That's pretty much what I do, except I use needlenose pliers to put the two bends in the string (that mimic what the strings look like when you took them off).

Whilst delivering coal and sweeping chimneys too no doubt.

Still the Doc's point is valid. Out of the 5 Fender guitars ive owned in my time, ive ony received a manual for one of em.

My new Gilmour came with one as did the CS before it, and my '97 MIA Standard. If you are a first owner there should be an owner's manual with the guitar. It comes in the 'goodies' pack which varies with the model. "You wouldn't want to leave home without it!"

I think that the kids in the shops use em for coffee mats or to set the guitars up by.

I may start insisting my daughter memorize the one i do have. I could just ask her what to do then. Ever see that film 'Johnny nemonic'.

I've got a pile of them up to the ceiling.. Owner's manuals, registrations, stickers and all the promotional stuff that was dangling off of the various parts of the guitars. They are nice little keepsakes to remind me that I have been through way too many of these guitars. So, if anyone needs any of this stuff feel free to send me a note.
