I went home after i had been on vacation in cancun and my alarm system had been ripped out of the wall. The cabinet I keep my Vintage in was tampered with and it was gone. It was a 56 strat with a 2tone sunburst and it cost me 15 grand. Has that happened to you? If anyone has had their axe stolen I feel your pain! [/quote]

Welcome to the forum, but I`m vey sorry to hear about your valuable loss. Can you claim it on the home insurance policy ? Providing the serial number will show the insurance company the value when they research it. Good luck and I hope your compensated for it.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. One thought to consider (assuming you haven't already) is; considering the instrument was in a locked cabinet and considering this happened while you were on "vacation"....to me it sounds like someone knew where to look and what was in that cabinet and they knew you were going to be gone. In other words, it could very well have been someone you know. Also since you didn't mention it, was anything else missing around the house? If not...if they only took the guitar, then they -had- to know it was there and you can bet it's someone you know.

Typically speaking, most "burglars/thieves" tend to be opportunistic...they see, they want, they take. Even a pro will typically go for stuff that he knows he can unload quickly and easily...jewelry, stereo equipment, etc. and not something like an easily identifiable musical instrument. Also as a general rule they don't usually mess around with things such as a cabinet that is "locked"...takes too much time for an unknown variable (in other words, a stranger isn't going to know there's a guitar in that cabinet, let alone that it's a vintage instrument of very high value and doesn't know how long you are gone or when you're going to be back, so why waste the time screwing with it?). There are certainly exceptions of course, but usually they go for the stuff that's worth the most money for least amount of fuss. On the other hand a person...professional or otherwise...who knew that guitar was there, perhaps even knew an proximate value (such as another guitar player maybe?) and who -knew- you weren't going to be home...makes for a tempting and easy grab.

Call me paranoid and I certainly don't know all the details here, but based on what you said so far, I would seriously suspect friends, family and/or band mates (current or past)...-anyone- who knew that instrument was there (X-wife/girl friend?). Hopefully, being a collectible you had it insured (don't count on your home owners insurance to cover it...it usually doesn't) or hopefully you'll get lucky enough to get it back again.

I would also check all of your local pawn shops and/or second hand music stores. I've known guys who've had their guitars stolen at a gig then just went out the next day and bought it back. Have the serial number and a picture/specific description of the guitar -with you- and if you do find it, stay at the store and call the police immediately so that the instrument can be taken into "protective custody"...if you are lucky enough to find it, you don't want it to walk away again. Also keep your eye out on Craigslist, Ebay and other local classifieds as well and you may even wish to register it as a stolen instrument....I forget the website, but if you do a Google, I know there's one out there where you can specifically list stolen instruments.

Just some thoughts to consider. Good Luck.
Jim

As long as you report the serial number to the police you stand a chance of finding it. I'm very sorry about your loss, I can't imagine how I'd feel if something like that happened to me. :(

Hope you had taken out extra insurance for vintage instruments. It's available. Also had the ser# and all possible documents, incl. pics in a safe place? This is impossible to replace, but at least you can get the value of your purchase back.

When I was sharing an apartment with a few of my buddies back in my early Navy days, our place was robbed. Once I realized what happened, my heart sank. Ohhhh noooo. I ran to my room. My '76 SG was still there. The room was small so I kept it out of the way under the bed. I am sure they never saw it. Besides trashing the place, they ended up taking my favorite leather jacket, one room-mate's Star Trek VHS collection, and another room mate's cash.

I hope that you had insurance on that 15K guitar. I hope that you get it back, but if it was insured, maybe you could just replace it? I have had a guitar and amp stolen from me in the past and although it was nowhere worth 15K, it still sucked. My condolences.
