Ok, pictures are worth a thousand words plus gives you a price range for most of the items. Also was not sure if you wanted to keep it Fender or mod with different stuff:

1. Nut

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=360450

or

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=361268

2. Tuners-- This is what I bought. They are great!

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=361404

3. Bridge/tremelo

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=361263

or

keep tremelo and replace the saddles with these

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=360627

or

http://www.floydrose.com/pro.html

you will not need the nuts above for this one, just the rest of the FR set up.

3. Pick ups

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=301637

or

http://accessories.musiciansfriend.com/ ... sku=301651

Looking forward to seeing the end result when you are done.

Hi Thumbs: I'm very late to this party, but I've read the thread carefully and studied the pictures ands specs of the Strat in question. This is what I'd do:

Put some vintage tuners on that puppy...

And maybe address the saddle screw issue you spoke of.

Apart from that... It's a nice Strat: a good model from a good year.

Here's my mad left of field idea. Leave it alone.

Not the point of the thread, obviously. So how's about: sell that guitar to me. Then use the proceeds to endulge in some of the custom body and neck suggestions on earlier pages.

Whachathink?

I sense I'm in a minority on this one...

I'm sure that you will easily believe that your not the first person to give this advice. For the first few months after I purchased this guitar I was of the same mindset. However; the more I play it, the more I find little things about it that keep this piece from being a great "playing" guitar.

Its not as though I'm out to destroy this guitar. I am actually rather attached to it. But, since I would like for it to be a daily player, it only makes sense to correct its short comings.

As far as selling it goes...If your willing to offer some rediculous sum then I'm willing to consider it.

I would also like to hear any suggestions you may have on the project as outlined at the moment.

Oh Geez! Here goes: as pointed out two of the tuners are loose one stripped out saddle. The pick ups are dull and lifeless. I'd like to have the neck sanded down to accomodate my short fingers and I would love to improve on the sustain. Also, The trem springs (3 spring set up) are 20 years old now and should probably be replaced.

The above are things that MUST be done. Anything else we've discussed is just a "while your at it" kind of deal.

well first off the tuners did that type serve you well during the last 20 years. If so replacing with the same type is a safe if boring option. If your going to change type you cant go far wrong with gotoh or schaller. Next you need to address whether you want normal or locking. Unless your looking for super fast string changes or adding extra mass to the headstock i cant see a reason for locking tuners. Stability can easily be acheived with standard tuners.

Concerning the neck you should seek proffesional advice. I've altered a necks depth twice first time it went great second time it turned into firewood. A set of planes and sanders are quite a expensive lay out for something you may not want to do.

Concerning pickups, everyones got a opinion, make your own mind up. Clapton mid boosts will sustain your guitar enough to rival anything except a sustainiac.

For a trem go to callaham if your feeling flush. I got a better improvement out of wilkinson though men of reknown dismiss them as poor quality. So it could just be down to my tastes.

Yep thats the puppy. It solves a lot of issues. Some ESP guitars have them fitted as standard, if you want to give one a try.
