Thumbs...you mentioned Texas Specials or CS 69s...I think you know what I prefer, so I'll just throw out a couple considerations. Its probably worth noting the SRV frequently copied Jimi and there are some similarities between the 69s and Tex Specials.

Your ax is a 69 RI and there is nothing wrong with keeping the original theme. 69 was a darn good year in strat land.

There are no Jimi Hendrix signature guitars, but lots of SRV strats out there.

Either way, I hope you go straight for Custom Shop.

This is my "OPINION", but I think the TexMex pups are just cheap knockoffs of the real Texas Specials and they sound like it. Also, I've seen many pup sets called "Texas Special" with no Custom Shop reference. They are Fender, but I dont think they are Custom Shop. Then there are true Custom Shop.....

Why Custom Shop and new? First, Custom Shop pups universally recognized as superior in quality, craftsmanship and tone. Even if they arent really better, everybody thinks they are better. When you say Custom Shop, people notice. Second, because of their craftsmanship, etc, they hold value. You pay more, but they keep their value. Third, they are hand wound by the experts and frequently have that pup experts signature along with a date on the pup. To me, this is not only will this authenticate and validate the pups, but it is very different from the mass produced pups from some Korean factory where the management doesnt even know who touched them. Lastly, since you are doing much of this work yourself, you will know how to wire and solder, install and remove. There is no reason you cant keep these KICK $@! Custom Shop pups for your next project guitar.

Oh yah...BUY NEW. Dont try to save a couple bucks on used CS pups because you simply wont know what you are buying. Pups take abuse, they corode, people spill things on them....DONT SKIMP ON PUPS.

Couldnt agree more Jay! I would never dream of buying used pups and will most deffinetly either go custom shop or kinman ( I'm really liking what i've read on the woodstocks so far, the price is tough to digest tho) another poster mentioned fat 50's which i am unfamiliar with but plan on looking into. I have a tele that will likely end up with tex specials in it, so I hesitate to use them also in this strat. so at the moment I'm leaning heavily toward the 69's or the kinmans although ultimately it will be decided by popular opinion. I spoke with 2 individuals yesterday qualified to do the body work that we have discussed thus far and will be checking references on both in the coming days.

I hope everyone else is having as much fun with this as I am. I cant wait to geet stated!

you've already been extremely helpful. I hope you dont mind my saying that I'm depending on you to be one of the voices of reason that keeps from from doing something to totally ruin this project.

I agree with bigjay on the pickups. Custom Shop '69s can't be beat!

As for other mods.. After playing the YJM Strat I am a big fan of brass nuts so I vote for that.

From what I've read so far I'm leaning towards brass also.

Looks like this project is shaping up nicely... And you thought this was going to be a big argument!

I definitely agree with sticking to the '69 theme. Make is as though Fender had added a Hot Rod '69 to the line up.

I'm loving the '69 hot rod idea painter! but must disagree with your other statment. I proposed this project in the spirit of putting our differences aside and focusing on the one thing everyone that visits the strat forum has in common. a deep seeded obsession with the strat. So far everything seems to be progressing nicely. Heres hoping it continues down that path!

Hi Thumbs: I'm very late to this party, but I've read the thread carefully and studied the pictures ands specs of the Strat in question. This is what I'd do:
Miami Mike wrote:

And maybe address the saddle screw issue you spoke of.

Apart from that... It's a nice Strat: a good model from a good year.

Here's my mad left of field idea. Leave it alone.

Not the point of the thread, obviously. So how's about: sell that guitar to me. Then use the proceeds to endulge in some of the custom body and neck suggestions on earlier pages.

Whachathink?

I sense I'm in a minority on this one...

Yeah, use the funds to hire Ceri to chop down an Ash tree, saw out some body slabs, age the wood, .... route out the body, and ship it to you in about 2 years.

Haha - that would be very swift by my standards of working!

I think several long meetings in the pub and walks across the moors to discuss the project are required first. Then many month of sober consideration. Then I'll start shopping for some new chisels...

I believe continents move faster!

Cheers - C
