I know this place probably gets a ton of these threads, but any help would be greatly appreciated. I purchased a Fender American Strat and was told that it's an '84. The person I bought it from said he bought it stock in '86 or so and had it modified; mods include a floyd, locking nut, S.D. JB Jr.'s, coil tap switch, and blue pearloid pickguard.

When I received the guitar I looked up the serial number and Fender's site said it should be either an '89 or a '90. Well, I took off the neck and it has a date on the bottom of the neck that says it's a '90. The person I bought it from said he never had the neck changed so the shop where he had it modified must have switched it. Yeah right, like you're not going to notice your guitar having a different neck AND a different serial number.

Anyway, I'm worried that I spent the money on this guitar and it's not a real American Strat (the body that is). I took a pic of the neck pocket and I was wondering if anyone here could possibly tell me anything I don't know about the body from the markings/stamp. Someone suggested that the seller flat out lied to me and that this was a project guitar and sold it as a modified '84 American Strat.

Someone I spoke with online said that it looks like the body originally had a 3-bolt pattern and was changed to 4-bolt. I just find it odd how many holes are in the neck pocket.

Here are some pics:

It does look like it might have been a 3-bolt at one point in time. I don't know for sure, but if it sounds good, I'd just play it. 8)

It sounds good, no doubt about that. I just think the seller lied to me and that's what I'm trying to find out for sure.

I believe Fender phased out the 3-bolt neck by the end of 1981. I'm not quite sure what you've got there.

I really couldn't tell whether it is a 3 bolt body. I would take it to a luthier. They will have a better idea by looking at the guitar 1st hand. You might want to check the back of the guitar under the neck plate. You might find your answers there. The 3 bolts were a triangle shape. Two bolts at the top towards the neck and one centered closer to the body. Go on line and look at pictures of '70's Strat to see what I'm talking about.

By the way, "guitar fraud" always ticks me off.

I have a 79 3 bolt strat...the 3rd bolt goes right through the hole in the tilt neck plate that is on the 3 bolt body..looks like yours might have that...also the screw is a little thicker then the other 2....you have to loosen the bolt in oder to adjust the tilt neck with an allen wrench through the tiny hole on the bottom of the neck plate....
