I have been looking around and researching what type of music is played with SSS Strat and have realized that most of the music that I would be interested in eventually playing is played with SSS Strats! Pink Floyd, Strokes, Smashing Pumpkins all use Strats with SSS pups, or at least that is what Google images tells me :P . Finally, my question is: What type of pups would be used in the SSS guitars used by these artists and how much do they cost? I know they are not using MIM Strats, But I figured I could put similar pups in my MIM strat to achieve a similar sound to that of Floyd or Smashing Pumpkins. Thanks!

I think I think David Gilmour had the best answer to your question.

"I can pick up any guitar and still sound like David Gilmour".

A player's style and technique is way more important than the instrument he plays.

I think Fender has signature models for both Billy Corgan and David Gilmour so you can check out the pickups used by checking out the technical specs for those guitars.

Billy Corgan

David Gilmour

Not to burst any bubbles, but here are couple of things to consider:

The guitarists you mention may be closely associated with single-coil Strats, but they've used a lot of guitars in the studio. For example, some of Gilmour's most admired solos were played on a Les Paul with P-90s.

But even more important: both David Gilmour and Billy Corgan are effects freaks, and they play through rigs that boggle the mind.... stacks and stacks of distortions, phasers, flangers, clean boosts, EQs and more.

Finally, even with all those effects, the WAY THEY PLAY the guitar is most important to the overall sound. Way back in the day, I used to reproduce Gilmour's "Learning To Fly" solo with nothing but a stock 80's MIJ Strat, a Boss BE-5 (yes, with a "B"... very early multieffects box) and a solid state Peavey amp with a single 12". All it took was some tweaking and many hours studying his phrasing and picking on the solo.

flplayer said it first: Listening and practicing will get you much closer than buying pickups.

Yeah I have heard that before and it does make a lot of sense. Thanks for the input.
