I am torn between these two instruments. This purchase will begin my venture into the world of guitar so I want to make a wise decision. I was planning on purchasing the Hss Strat because I read that the humbucker pickup is a nice addition. When I went to order the guitar (HSS Standard Strat/ Arctic White/ Rosewood Fret Board) it was out of stock! I will have to wait 1 more month to get a guitar! Since I am impatient I was wondering if the wait is really worth it or should I just buy the SSS Standard Strat? :?:

What about buying the SSS now and upgrading the PUPs in the future? Do the humbucking pups that fit in the single coil slots sound good? I do plan on only owning 1 guitar so it seems that the HSS would be the better buy. Is there anyone who prefers the SSS over the HSS, if so, why?

First of all.....be very careful what questions you ask in these forums. I've been here only a short time, but have been in a couple scrapes with guys whose opinions and egos are just as large or larger than mine. These heated debates frequently devolve to arguments, including personal insults, when people inject their personal preferences or opinions in the discussion about factual differences, usually not recognizing the difference.

Asking whether the SSS "sounds better" than an HSS is like asking if vanilla "tastes better" than chocolate. There is no correct answer, only personal opinions and preferences. This is not to say we cant discuss the factual differences between them, but applying you own personal value assumption to each is your privaledge and your business.

So, to your question...most Strat bodies are cut to accomodate both single coils and double coils. Moreover, the pickups are not attached to the body of the guitar, but rather the pickguard...the white cover under the strings. If you unscrew the pickguard from the body (dont unscrew the pickups) you can peek under the guard to ensure your body will accept humbuckers. Likely it will so you could easily convert to an HSS, or other combination later if you like. Of course, you will need to buy a new pickguard and maybe change your pot circuitry.

A potentially easier way to skin that cat without having to buy a second guitar would be to buy another complete "loaded" pickguard/pickup/pot circuit combination and simply replace the existing one with the new one. Then you only need to resolder the ground to the tremolo bracket in the back and the ground to the input jack, plus attach a third ground to the body which uses a screw rather than solder.

You can buy a "loaded" pickguard in an HSS set up, or even a third in an HH set up and maybe an HSH set up if your body accepts those combinations.

You will need to decide the quality of the pickups you prefer, but there are many to choose from.

jay your brilliant and so true. the ones here with the ego's
i laugh at because there wrong more than right and just dont get
that. i have been playing strats longer than most of these ego
starving people and they dont get theres a lot of us here who do
know what there talking about most of the time not all the time
but most. you know who they are and so do i and i personaly
avoid them they serve no purpose to me. take care jay.

I agree that it is usually not the best thing to say that one way is better than another.

When I was looking for my first good electric guitar I knew I wanted a Stratocaster. But I also knew that I might not be buying any more electric guitars for a while, so I needed something versatile.

My salesman, who I have learned to trust, told me that the single coil bridge pickup on a Stratocaster is considered by some to be weak. It has a great chimey jangly sound to it, but you would never mistake it for a Gibson. So he asked me to check out an HSS model and I was convinced. I knew a lot of things I wanted to play that would benefit from that fat humbucker sound. The issue wasn't so much what I liked as what I could do.

I would say that if you have to live with one guitar and want it to be a Stratocaster, then an HSS configuration could be the best choice. If you are planning to buy other guitars in the future, then you can get the sounds you are looking for out of other guitars.

Where are you ordering from? Try another site if it's out of stock.

Yes it's personal preference of which guitar to get. You can't go wrong with any.

Thank you so much..you were all very helpful. I intend to play mostly Hard and classic rock with some blues mixed in. It sounds like the Hss is more versatile and I plan on owning this guitar for a while. I will probably wait or find another store to buy the Hss since it is out of stock at my current choice. I am planning on buying it from MusiciansFriend.com. They sell the Hss in Arctic White with Rosewood Fret board and a Gig bag for $399. I haven't found it anywhere else at this price including a gig bag. I really dont want to spend more than $400.

Don't let them tell you they're doing you a favor by throwing in the gig bag. They come from Fender with a gig bag.

for 400 bucks you will get one of the older versions of standard strats, if you want to get one of the new versions with the new logo and tinted neck Id recommend to spend 50 bucks more and you will be happier :)

Wait is that all I get for $50 more? If you are joking with me then you can disregard the rest of this post: I really don't care about the new logo or tinted neck. The guitars will sound similar, right? I would rather save the $50 and maybe spend it on a better amp or something.

I remember I used to have a mim Floyd rose strat and i must say that it played better than my MIA Deluxe does- neck was perfect and it held tune better- its a shame I sold it.. it was my perfect guitar..

My opinion is regardless of what you want, if you want something and you have saved long and hard enough- dont settle for second best
