well, I'll be going to college this fall, and I know I'm bringing my guitar, but my current amp might take up too much room (it's a crate gt65...not that big but could be big for a dorm room), and might be too loud, so I thought I might buy the Fender Champ 600...
Is this amp recommended?
any other recommendations?

I have a Roland Micro Cube that has some effects built into. It comes with an adaptor, has a handle and can run off 6 AA batteries if you don`t have a power source. Its about the size of a car battery and sounds decent for its size. You might want to check one of them out.

my college wouldn't allow electric guitars, so my roommate had a tricky time with his SG freshman year. He'd have to play it so quietly it was easier to get an acoustic for dorm room playing.

you can definitely sneak them in though, but just in case, I'd get an amp with a headphone jack. never know who's rooming above, below, or next to you that might not enjoy a well played strat coming through their walls. and a decent set of 'phones for $30-$50 is better than getting written up for noise.

I picked up one of those champ 600's the other day. They have a sweet nostalgia tone. I have it in the living room. i am in a 4-plex, so don't want to rock the neighbors out all the time.
You can get a lot of great tones out of it. I play clean, or through my tubescreamer. Be prepared though, it can sound very very50's without any kind of stompboxes. Thats why i bought it, you get a great blues and or rock tone. The TS-808 really brings the overall sound ahead (all the way to the 60's and 70's, or to a texas blues kind of sound.) don't expect to ever get any kind of modern tones out of it.I'm gonna borrow a friends outboard fender reverb tank, he got in the mid 90's. if that sounds sweet, I'll liberate it from him, he doesn't use it at all.

i was interested in the champ600 and still am. I bought a vibrochamp xd when i couldnt find the champ600 localy. Decent amp, still quite loud @5watts. I rarely take mine past 2 or 3 late at night. It does perform well at low settings though. I suspect the champ600 is the same way inclined.

Don't get an amp pick up a Korg Pandora you can use headphones with it and you can get killer tone out of the thing.

Try out a GDEC... Has headphone jack lots of effects. Got the band built in and has midi jacks. Solid State though... Less than $200.00 US

The Vox DA-5 is a nice one. It may be solid state, but the modeling is pretty cool. The Auto Wah effect works very well, just like on the ValveTronix amps. So far, the Vox modeling amps are the only ones I've found that can do Auto Wah that sounds like a wah pedal. I've tried it, a few times, with my Peavey TransTube 258 combo, but it can't even come close to Vox.

I keep one of those little Vox Amplugs in my case at all times for those occasions where I need to rock out in silence, but I wouldn't want to be using it all the time. Very cheap, though, and quite a decent sound considering...
