You can`t even compare a $100 guitar to a $1000 guitar. The quailty is much better from paint to components and everything inbetween.

The paint is likely different, but I dont know that for sure. Different paint and finish does affect the tone, but its a personal preference as to which sounds better.

The lacquer on the Squier will be polyester and will likely be remarkably thick. On the Am Std it is polyurethane, applied reasonably thinly. Not "thin-skin", mind, but thoroughly acceptable.

People get very excited about the type and thickness of lacquer. Possibly in blind tests with every other variable kept identical we really could hear the difference... You can be sure this thread will fill up with people saying the tonal difference is apparent and vital to them! And who can say otherwise?

Much more obvious is the look and feel of the finishes. You can likely drop that Squier without leaving a mark. If the polyester does dent it comes off in a rather unattractive deep chip, which does feel a bit cheap. Absolutely not a deal breaker, though.

There will probably be differences in the quality of the timber. Putting aside the issue of veneers I wouldn't let any of that worry you. I definitely cannot hear the difference between one, two and more piece bodies. I award a case of champagne to anyone who can prove that they can hear that difference - so long as their name is not Eric Johnson...

Incidentally, the new Squier Classic Vibe series guitars have been getting rave reviews from reliable people. Well worth looking at.

Cheers - C

My Squier Strat's body is thinner then my MIM Fender. I've never compared either of them with an American Strat though.

Nikininja once ran a thread where he stripped a MIM Strat. He had the genius idea of weighing it before and after stripping. Why, I just happen to have those weights written down here...

Before stripping: 1887 grams / 4.16 lbs

After stripping: 1690 grams / 3.72 lbs

That's 197 grams / 6.94 ounces of finish on a Mexican body. Now you know why it feels so heavy!

Measuring a guitar's finish by weight: that was an iconic moment on the Forum, I thought...

Ceri...you astound me with your data!!!!!

That is truly amazing...so much weight associated with the finish.

I never would have guessed its that high a percentage.

Very good info.

Ah, I should quickly admit I didn't really just have those numbers waiting conveniently to hand over many months.

But the weird coincidence is that (for my own nefarious purposes) earlier today I wanted to remind myself of how much finish Niki had stripped off and so had in fact gone back to look through his early posts to find the info. It is true that I had those numbers written down here - but the ink is still fresh on the paper...

Anyhow: it's a delicious piece of knowledge, isn't it? Never heard a guitar's finish expressed by weight before.

Cheers - C

Even i couldnt find em its been so long
Also i have to agree with the tonal quality to price theory. The ratio is nowhere near proportionate.

Niki, looking through early pages of your posts it is amazing how many of them seemed very fresh to my memory.

Including the very first couple. My, I mistook who you were, didn't I? Soon learned my error...

i have a 2006 MIM standard strat. in 2006 a lot of
upgrades were done to the MIM strats. for exsample
the MIM strats from 2006 to present are cut from select alder woods
the same alder woods most of the MIA strats are cut from.
also my 2006 MIM has 4 piece alder body just like most
of the MIA body's. so i would say they both use the same
quality of alder and maple woods. i see no differnce in
the quality.
